Preparation: 1 classical comedic monologue, 1-2 minutes in length. As an option, you can sing a brief song acapella.

THE PLAY: What begins as a joyous announcement of marriage leads to a twisted tale of feuding families, mistaken identities, duels and revenge. The Servant of Two Masters is a superbly constructed farce, which sees double-dealing servants getting the upper hand, crimes of passion being committed and fate ultimately restoring happiness out of mass confusion.

MALE CHARACTERS

Florindo: (age 25-35) Handsome, passionate and assured. On the run from Turin after killing Fedarigo in a duel. A successful merchant, Florindo possess a quick wit and at times a violent temper, usually directed at his servant-in-tow, Truffaldino.

Dr. Lombardi: (age 45-60) Silvio’s doting father, an elder law professor. Dr. Lombardi’s self-absorbed, Latin spouting pontifications are a source of constant irritation to all those around him. Both pompous and officious, the protection of his high status draws him into easy confrontation with the equally stubborn Pantalone.

Pantalone: (age 45-60) Clarice’s father, Pantalone is consumed entirely by the acquisition of money and the approval of those around him. He has a flair for melodrama and fails to see the hilarity his huge ego inspires. Pantalone has a slightly tender side, but he is quick to quarrel and is adamant that he must be obeyed, especially when it concerns the choice of his daughter’s groom.

Brighella: (age 30-60) The local innkeeper, Brighella is a blustery, good-natured fellow who is at times easily fooled. He is determined to provide quality service, food and drink to his clients although he lacks the social skills and is easily befuddled when things go wrong.

Silvo: (age 18-25) The son of Dr. Lombardi. A handsome young man full of youth, fiery passion and a dangerous jealous streak. Silvio is betrothed to Clarice but is confounded when the allegedly dead Fedarigo arrives. Dr. Lombardi attempts to reason with Silvio but his rage has no bounds.

FEMALE CHARACTERS

Clarice: (age 18-23) Daughter of the domineering Pantalone. Pretty, love-struck, vulnerable and with a mercurial emotional range. Clarice possesses a strong heart and develops an increasingly assured voice of her own. At the beginning of the play she is betrothed to her true love, Silvio.

Smeraldina: (age 20-30) Smeraldina is maid and confident to Clarice. Smeraldina is a strong-willed, spicy force of nature and finds it difficult to hold her tongue – especially when it comes to the subject of men. However she is desperate to find true love and her eyes are always on the prowl for prospects.

Beatrice Rasponi: (age 25-30) Beatrice is traveling in disguise as her slain brother Fedarigo Rasponi. Beatrice is in love with Florindo but determined to collect the dowry owed to Fedarigo by Pantalone. She is confident, brash and a swashbuckler to boot. She has a zest for life and seizes every opportunity. Yet she is plagued with a grieving heart and conviction she will never again see Florindo.
