The play in a nutshell:
Germaine Lauzon wins one million Green Stamps and invites friends and family to help paste them into books – and simmering resentments shake up all fifteen women. It’s been translated into 20 languages and may be Canada’s most-produced play.
CHARACTERS (ages refer to characters, not actors – and are approximate):
- Germaine Lauzon – housewife, 40’s, second oldest of four sisters. Has a sense of superiority due to her winning 1 million trading stamps.
- Linda Lauzon – Daughter of Germaine, 20’s, works in retail. Has an impulsive personality. Constantly at odds with her mother.
- Rose Ouimet – Third oldest sister, 35-45, the comedian of the family. She dares to say what others won’t. Her secret: quietly enduring the repeated sexual assaults of her brutish husband.
- Gabrielle Jodin – Oldest sister, 48-55. She is subdued, reserved and self-effacing.
- Lisette de Courval – 40’s, a neighbour. Thinks herself more sophisticated and morally above her more vulgar neighbours. She is awkward in her condescension.
- Marie-Ange Brouillette – late 20’s. Jealous, angry, hard done by, over looked, ignored. First to arrive and first to steal from Germaine.
- Yvette Longpré– 40’s – 50’s, a neighbour. The very personification of happiness and contentment, thus making her seem completely invisible.
- Des-Neiges Verrette – 30’s – 40’s, a neighbour. Still single, but longs for Mr.Simard.
- Thérèse Dubuc – mid 30’s, a neighbour who cares for her invalid mother in-law. Sometimes in a troubling way.
- Olivine Dubuc – 90’s, invalid, wheelchair bound mother in-law of Thérèse. She is bitter. Very few lines.
- Ginette Ménard – 17-20, friend of Lise & Linda. Little nosey. Hard home life. Desperately wants to be liked by her friends, who perpetually reject her.
- Lise Paquette – 19-22, friend of Linda and Ginette. Naive, desperate, just discovered that she is pregnant
- Rhéauna Bibeau – 55-65, aging bachelorette. Lives with Angeline. She is the more dominating of the two.
- Angéline Sauvé – 55-65, aging bachelorette, who lives with Rheauna. Docile, but reveals a tightly held secret.
- Pierrette Guérin – 32 (but can look older), has lived a hard life. The youngest sister. Black sheep of the family. Ostracized by her family and abandoned by her man Johnny.
