The Play:

On the surface, the story of Angus, Morgan and Miles takes us back to the summer of 1972 when a collective of artists arrived in rural Ontario to create a play reflecting the real life experiences of farmers. Through living with farm families and capturing their stories, The Farm Show was born. Initially the story is funny and charming as the farmer, Morgan, gets the better of Miles, the naïve actor from Toronto. The other farmer, Angus is more of a mystery. Injured during WW II while stationed in England, Angus still has the pain though his memory is gone. All he has is the story Morgan has repeated for almost those many years. Miles, the actor, just wants to “get your history and give it back to you.” He wants Morgan and Angus to see their lives through art, through theatre. What is unexpected is the impact of storytelling on Angus. As Angus begins to remember and becomes “starved to know”, the lies are revealed and the story is re-told.

Characters:  3 Men
Ages listed are a guide for how the character should appear onstage, not necessarily the age of the actor.

Morgan: 50’s It is important that Morgan be played by an actor who looks to be in his mid-50’s (1970’s like – so up to 60ish). He went to war in his early 20’s and has been on the farm for the last 30 years. He has worked hard but he is sharp.  He has a wicked sense of humour. Morgan protects his friend Angus.

Angus: Like Morgan, he needs to be played by an actor who looks to be in his mid-50’s. He should never become a stereotype. He is wounded, he has lost his memory but it has not affected his voice and stature. He is strong and able. He was the drawer boy-skilled, creative, the poet. He needed to keep the poems and say the Hopkins just once when it mattered. He was the boy who stayed in the trees to watch the world.

Miles: In his mid 20’s. He has attended U of T and Rochdale managing to rack up $3600 in tuition debt in 1972. So Miles has lived the great Toronto, urban, hippie scene. He has a good heart and some acting experience as he has already played Hamlet and a hedgehog in a show about dead animals. Miles is loosely based on Miles Potter who was part of the farm show and founding member of Theatre Passe Muraille.
