The Play: Set in a Catholic school in the Bronx, New York in 1964, conservative Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young charismatic and modern-minded Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students.

Characters:
Ages listed reflect how the character should appear onstage, not necessarily the age of the actor. All ethnicities are welcome.

Note: Given the period, context and location of the play, there are themes in the play related to racial identities which are specifically referenced. For example, Mrs. Muller is referred to by the playwright as "Black" although the other characters are not racially identified. Scarborough Players is committed to diversity in casting and encourages actors of all ethnicities to audition for roles they are interested in.

1. Father Brendan Flynn – male, 35-40 years of age
A priest assigned to St. Nicholas Church and school where he teaches, religion health education and coaches basketball. He is a progressive priest who strives to make the Church a friendly, welcoming place. He is cool, down to earth, with-it, articulate and compassionate. Father Flynn is charming and seductive, but giving one a slight feeling that something might be off.

2. Sister Aloysius Beauvier – female, 55+ years of age
A nun and the principal at St. Nicholas School. She is deeply embedded in the doctrine of the Catholic Church. She holds both hard work and her devotion to the Church in the highest regard. She believes in strict order and discipline. She is fierce, domineering, intimidating, forbidding, dry, and commanding. Beneath her brisk and no-nonsense veneer there is no question that she is nurturing and caring. She’s hard on everyone because she truly believes it’s for their own good.

3. Sister James – female, mid- to late-twenties
A nun and eighth grade teacher at St. Nicholas School. She is a new teacher at the school and wishes to please Sister Aloysius while remaining true to her beliefs. She is open, impressionable, vulnerable, naïve, thoughtful, and progressive in her teaching techniques. She possesses a certain innocence and sensitivity. She wants very much to please Sister Aloysius, but wants to believe in the goodness of people but Sister Aloysius has encouraged her to be suspicious and doubtful.

4. Mrs. Muller – female, 35-40 years of age
Mrs. Muller is the mother of Donald Muller, the school’s first black student and the object of Sister Aloysius’ suspicions. She is a realistic woman who is concerned about her son’s future and will do whatever it takes to ensure his safety, whatever the cost. She appreciates the attention Father Flynn has paid to Donald, regardless of his motivations, and feels that he is a positive influence in Donald’s life.

Requirements: Please prepare a short dramatic monologue – less than 90 seconds – something you love and know well off book. You may be re-directed. You may also be asked to do a cold reading from the play. Please read the play. A copy of the play will be on hold at the 5th floor Audio Desk, Toronto Reference Library. Please bring photo (photocopy will do) and resume.

Auditions are booked in 10-minute slots. Please indicate the role(s) in which you are interested.

Auditions and Rehearsals will be held at 780 Birchmount, Unit 5 (West side of Birchmount, south of Eglinton, beside the Alison’s Food Outlet. TTC accessible by #17 Bus from Warden Station or any Eglinton West bus from Kennedy Station).

Very Important: Rehearsals will required between Christmas and New Year’s

First read-through will be Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 1 p.m.

Most rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. and Sundays, 1 – 5 p.m.

Some rehearsals and all performances are at Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Road (at Markham Road).

Additional rehearsals may be added as we move closer to the production opening.

You will be asked to please list ANY potential conflicts from November 4, 2018 to January 26 on your audition forms.
