Marlene is throwing a dinner party to celebrate her promotion at Top Girls Temp Agency. Her guests? Five powerful wonder women from the historical past. Marlene strives to join their ranks, and does – but at what cost? Set in Thatcher’s Britain, Caryl Churchill’s magical yet realistic play brilliantly dramatizes the timeless quest to define success and women’s struggle to achieve it.

Isabella Bird: (1831-1904) Intrepid traveller
Lady Nijo: (b. 1258) Emperor’s courtesan turned Buddhist nun
Dull Gret: Subject of a Brueghel painting, where she leads women in a charge through Hell
Pope Joan: Thought to have been pope, disguised as a man, between 854 and 856
Patient Griselda: Obedient wife from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales
Joyce: Marlene’s sister, adoptive mother to Angie, resentful of Marlene’s career
Angie: (16) Marlene’s daughter, aggressive and impetuous
Kit: (14) Angie’s younger next-door neighbour, bright girl with academic ambitions
Win: Employee at Top Girls, very career-focused
Nell: Employee at Top Girls, career-focused and envious of Marlene’s promotion
Jeanine: (early 20s) Job candidate at Top Girls, wants to save money for a wedding and family
Louise: (mid-late 40s) Job candidate at Top Girls, wants a new job where her experience is valued
Mrs. Kidd: Marlene’s co-worker’s wife. Wants Marlene to give her husband her promotion
Shona: Job candidate at Top Girls, has lied about her work experience
Waitress: Non-speaking role, server at promotion dinner

You may also be asked to read from the script, so it is highly recommended that you are familiar with the play. Reading copies will be available at the 5th Floor Arts Desk of the Toronto Reference Library. Please bring a copy of your resume and headshot to the audition.
