Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street, Toronto, ON (SW corner of Berkeley and Adelaide Street East) Entry by Stage Door on Adelaide.

Performance dates: 
September 20 – October 5, 2019

 

Description of Play:
Witty, funny and poignant, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play traces the coming of age of Heidi Holland from a 1960s teen to a 1980s career woman. Through three iconic decades, Heidi and her friends seek to achieve political, professional and personal fulfilment.

E-mail with headshot and resume to ATCheidiauditions@gmail.com . Please indicate the role you are interested in and be sure to include your phone number so we can contact you!  Please specify if you are an Alumnae Theatre Member, as members are given preference of audition.  

 

PREPARATION:
Please prepare a short (2-3 min.) contemporary monologue. You may also be asked to read from the script, so it is highly recommended that you are familiar with the play and the characters. We request actors to choose the role they would like to audition for. Sides assigned to each character are available on the Opportunities-Actors section of the alumnae website.

A copy of the play will be on hold at the 5th Floor Arts Desk, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St.

 

REHEARSALS:
REHEARSALS will begin Monday July 29th.

 

THE ROLES                                                                
Alumnae Theatre is committed to non-traditional casting and to including talented actors of all races, backgrounds, and ages in our productions.
1. HEIDI (F)                  
Age Range 16-40  
Description: Heidi evolves from quiet wallflower in high school, to an art historian who achieves recognition as an author and professor. Her confidence and charisma grow as she ages. Heidi is often a spectator in her own world. She becomes disenchanted with the women’s movement, the men in her life, and her own quest for happiness.
  
2. SUSAN (F)
Age Range 16-40
Description: Susan is Heidi’s best friend. She changes with the times and is able to rationalize every decision. She turns into a dealmaker, bent on greed and power.
 
3. PETER (M)
Age Range 20-40
 Description: Peter is Heidi’s best male friend. He is gay. Peter becomes a successful paediatric doctor while struggling as a gay man amidst the AIDs crisis which takes a heavy toll on his friends.
 
4. SCOOP (M)
Age  Range 20-40
Description: Scoop is Heidi’s love interest. He is a Jewish man who is charming, arrogant , glib, and self-assured. Throughout the play, Scoop appears in and out of Heidi's adult life. The chemistry between them remains, though as adults, they both realize that they wouldn't have been good for each other.
      
5. FRAN (F) Also plays Molly, Betsy, April
Age Range 25-40
Description: Fran is a  fierce feminist lesbian.
 
6. BECKY (F) Also plays Clara and Denise
Age Range 17-30 
Description: Becky is a seventeen-year-old abandoned by her paren'ts and living with an abusive boyfriend.
 
7. CHRIS BOXER  (M) Also plays Mark, TV attendant, Waiter, Ray
Age Range 16-20
Description: Chris is the Student Council President who invites Heidi to twist at the high school dance but she declines despite his best attempts.
 
8. LISA (F) also plays Debbie and Jill
Age Range 20-30
Description:  Lisa is deliberately classy and speaks with a slight southern accent. She  is an illustrator of children’s books and marries Scoop.
