Talking Matters by Marina Engelking and Merrill Swain
Directed by Barbara Hyland
Play Synopsis
Talking Matters tells the story of David and Inga, two lonely, elderly residents in a long-term care home and their spirited caregivers. Inspired by research into the ways that language can be used to enhance memory and cognition in seniors with dementia, the play reveals David and Inga’s struggles with language and their longing for respect and dignity. Long-time head nurse, Bea Palmer, is charged with implementing yet another “new” policy aimed at improving residents’ well-being, a task she accepts half-heartedly in an understaffed and overworked workplace. A young, quirky volunteer, Lizzy gets involved in turning things around with both expected and unexpected results.

AVAILABLE ROLE: Lizzy Roth
Lizzy Roth is the new volunteer at Melrose Place, a long-term care home. In her late 20s, Lizzy is a whip smart, energetic, confident woman with a counter-culture mindset. She is fit and self-assured. With intense curiosity and slightly nerdy interests, Lizzy is a charmingly quirky character. She is a straight shooter and a perfect match for David, an older resident with mild dementia. The two enjoy playing the back-and-forth banter of sarcastic wit, but they are kindred spirits who quickly develop a warm friendship. Unlike her supervisor, head nurse Bea, Lizzy intuitively understands the “new” way of speaking with residents that the home’s new policy espouses. She has a natural tendency to listen carefully with respect. This endears her quickly to David and eventually Inga, another resident in the home, as she guides them both towards enhanced memory and well-being . At first, her counter-culture appearance and independent mind set her at odds with Bea, but slowly the two develop a light-hearted, mutually respectful relationship.
