THE FIGHTING DAYS

ALL ACTORS MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19

AUDITIONS will be held ON ZOOM at the following dates and times:

• Tuesday, October 18, 7:00pm – 10:30pm
• Wednesday, October 19, 7:00pm – 10:30pm
• Thursday, October 20, 7:00pm – 10:30pm

Callbacks will be held AT THE VILLAGE PLAYHOUSE, 2190E Bloor St. West (around the corner from Runnymede subway station): 

• Sunday, October 23, 1:00pm – 5:00pm

REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES will be held at the Village Playhouse. Some rehearsals will be held on Zoom. Rehearsals will generally be 3 hours in duration, but are flexible depending on actor availability: Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7-10pm) and Sunday afternoon (2-5pm). The first rehearsal will be the afternoon of Sunday, November 6, at the theatre (subject to change). All actors must be available for Tech Week (Sunday, January 8 to Thursday January 12) and all performances.

THE PLAY:

A play about the polarities of public and private lives, and about issues of racism and pacifism within the women’s movement, The Fighting Days deals with timeless moral concerns.  

CHARACTERS – 6F, 1M:

• FRANCES BEYNON – female 20s: A naive rural girl who becomes a newspaper writer and matures into a strongly principled woman prepared to challenge the prevailing attitudes of the time.
• LILY – female 20s: Frances’ older sister who attempts to mentor and protect her while facing her own challenges.
• NELLIE MCCLUNG – female 40s: The public voice of the suffragette movement – a woman of great influence and some prejudices.
• GEORGE MCNAIR – male 40s-50s: Newspaper editor. A complex man whose traditional ideas are challenged by events and his attraction to Frances.   
• THREE (3) WOMEN OF VARYING AGES – female 17 and up: To read letters, create crowds, underscore the actions of the play. This play has timeless issues at its core. We want to use these various-aged women characters to highlight the modern relevancy of the script while telling the historical story of the play. In addition to the on-stage reading of letters, you will participate in crowd scenes and facilitate movement of set pieces.

PREPARATION: Please prepare a short (1-2 minute) comedic or dramatic monologue, on which you may be re-directed. Actors must also READ THE PLAY (a copy will be available upon request). Also, be prepared for a cold read.
