Algernon Montcrieff (30s) his friend, a gentleman, aspiring pianist, and Bunburyist.
Lady Bracknell (40s plus) strong matriarch, aunt of Algernon
Hon Gwendolen Fairfax (her daughter) (20s) haughty, as liberated as can be at that time
Cecily Cardew (John Worthing’s ward) (20s)-lives in the country, but knows her own mind
Rev. Canon Chasuble D.D. (Rector of Woolton) (40s plus) a traditionalist, very sincere
Miss Prism (Governess to Cecily) (40s plus), aspiring author, genteel
Lane (Mr. Montcrieff’s man-servant) (40s plus) – wry humour
Merriman (Butler to Mr. Worthing) (40s plus)- these 2 roles may be combined
NOTES: The play will be set in 1895. Male actors will be asked to grow their hair, if it should be short. Good posture-as though wearing a corset, for both sexes.
Upperclass English accents are required for the auditions as well as the production. Language is very important for this play and actors will be expected to have books down early in the rehearsal period. Paraphrasing will not be tolerated.
Auditionees must have read the play.
For the audition: a 2-minute English comedic monologue, plus a cold read.
