Audition: WARP Devised Workshop Series
Audition Call – non-equity / non-union
I am a first-time playwright, holding devised workshop sessions to inform development of the 2nd draft of a script-in-progress.
My goals are to explore:
· The motivations and actions of 2 characters, Paisly and Macha, and the interrelationship between these characters and their environment/s.
· The visual language of the story.
· The interrelationship between theatrical language and virtual reality.
WHAT I HAVE TO OFFER
· $1,322.10 for a total of 22.5 hours project participation inclusive of HST.
· Over 15 years of creative and group facilitation experience.
· A proactive, receptive, and non-judgmental approach to collaboration.
· Please note, this is a non Equity workshop. I will provide a Letter of Agreement for the workshop engagement.
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR
Casting:
MACHA (30+) is a gender-queer or nonbinary ancient warrior god/dess who has been publicly wronged, their/her/his dreams ruined. Maligned, determined, skilled, seeking revenge.
PAISLY (15-18) is a teenager who is grappling intimately with the loss of her father. Iconoclastic, grieving, uncertain, seeking freedom.
*Please note, this is casting for collaborative participation in a workshop for early script development, not casting call for final production. Since this is a research-phase project, the casting may focus more on interest to explore the character motivations than exact age or physical attributes.
Performance Skills: physical theatre, improvisation, dance agility, character development based on exploration of physical actions. Movement will be character-driven, and we will experiment with a range of heightened and naturalistic movement styles.
Attitude Towards Creating:
· Openness to explore character development through movement, image, and text, without a pre-existing script.
· Amenable to video capture of workshop content that the playwright will 1) use to document the workshop process for further script development and 2) prototype approaches to staging using immersive video.
· Openness to experiment, take creative risks, and explore the non-obvious.
· Responsive and communicative, eager to offer insights, thoughts, and questions that contribute to character development.
· Experience with improvisation within performance and design collaboration.
· Willingness to center design as a starting point for storytelling.
TEAM
Erin Howley, Playwright
I am a community-engaged artist whose work spans inner worlds and societal landscapes. Through installation, video, and performance-based inquiry, my practice activates material history to expose social intimacies that lie at the core of public policy. I am influenced by 15 years of frontline work in the US and Canada, collaborating through education and research with communities at the forefront of criminal justice and drug policy reform. Through intentional collaboration, I use storytelling to explore themes of identity, justice, and power.
Nathan Bruce, Lighting / Staging Design
I am an interactive media artist and theatre designer who explores the frontiers of embodied technology, in which audiences are entwined with interactive media. I apply cutting-edge artistic research to create live performance designs and new media exhibitions, for example the use of touchless sensors to influence lighting, sound, and projections through physical movement. My artistic pieces encompass symbiotic relationships between the body and technology, driving one another forward through an abstract dialogue.

*The last workshop on November 24th may include a showing to a small audience to gather feedback.
Location: All workshops will be located at Charles Street Video, 76 Geary Ave, Toronto. The audition will be held in a separate space, details below.
Compensation: $1,322.10 in total per performer for a total of 22.5 hours at $52/hour plus HST.
AUDITIONS

Audition Location: 10 Heintzman Street, Toronto, ON M6P 2J6
Audition Date: Sunday, October 6th, 1:00 – 3:30pm
In-person auditions will take place in 30-minute time slots. If you are selected to audition, you will be notified by October 3rd of the details of your scheduled audition time between 1:00 – 3:30pm. There will be no callbacks.
Audition Process
Auditions will be collaborative, with 2 performers at a time. The audition will last up to 30 minutes, in which we’ll explore a few devising exercises together.
In advance, please invent a 3-minute wordless performance that tells the story of a time when you ‘made space’.
· Your only prop is a 5-foot piece of yarn.
· Set your performance to a single piece of music.
· You can use as little or as much of the studio space as you’d like.
· Include a surprise.
· Shift the audience’s perspective in some dynamic way: ex the use of scale or point of view.
