A 560-Mile Walk Across Northern Ireland on Sore Feet
Will Ferguson set out to walk the Ulster Way, the longest waymarked trail in the British Isles. Too bad he did it in one of the wettest years on record and too bad the trail was more of a good idea than an actual clearly marked path. Too bad for Will Ferguson but good news for you if you enjoy sitting comfortably reading laugh-out-loud funny tales of friendly people, unfriendly farm dogs, long damp slogs through beautiful landscapes and a language that is a lot like English but not quite.
Ferguson (whose Grandfather was born in Northern Ireland) first traveled to Northern Ireland in 2000, not all that long after the Good Friday Agreement had brought a fragile peace. In addition to friendly people and beautiful scenery he finds plenty of evidence of decades, centuries really, of religious strife. Beyond Belfast is a rare combination, a subtle and well informed history of Northern Ireland wrapped up in a hilarious and highly entertaining travel account.
