The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Margaret Lea, is surprised when reclusive author Vida Winter selects her to write her biography. A best-selling author, Winter has never been forthcoming about her life, sharing only a series of fictitious accounts with reporters up to this point. Now gravely ill, she wants Margaret to record her real story for posterity.
Margaret is unfamiliar with Winter’s work and immediately seeks out a copy of her book Thirteen Tales of Change and Desperation. She is spellbound by the stories but puzzled when she realizes that there are only twelve included in the book. Intrigued, she agrees to meet and work with Vida Winter.
Margaret visits the author’s crumbling Yorkshire mansion where Winter begins to tell her story. Margaret notices parallels her life and Vida’s and begins investigating the apparen't connections.
Setterfield’s debut novel is a modern Gothic novel reminiscent of works by Daphne DuMaurier and the Brontes.
