Swimming Home was a finalist for the 2012 Man Booker Prize. Although the winner was Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies, many critics felt that Swimming Home would have been a better choice.

Poet Joe Jacobs is vacationing with his wife, teenage daughter and another couple in France. When they arrive at their rented villa, they discover a young woman swimming in their pool. Kitty Finch is a fan of Joe's work and has come to share her own poetry with him.

Kitty is invited to stay at the villa by Joe's wife Isabel, a war correspondent and the vacation becomes a battle for dominance as the situation descends into near-chaos.
