The magic of advertising

I believe that there is nothing better than a great ad.  My kids make fun of me when I gush over a well done commerical or print ad, but I truly believe that it is an art and science unlike any other. When it all comes together, it is magic. So imagine my delight a few weekends ago when there were two interesting articles on advertising in the weekend's papers.

The first was on the new marketing campaign put together by The National Capital Commission for the Ottawa area.  The ad uses the catch phrase "Canadian. Just like you.", and pictures a young woman with a copy of the Canadian flag painted on her face. It brought a tear to my eye and a lump in my throat (just like it was supposed to). After much market research and quite a number of potential slogans, this was the winner. Check out what went into the original research for this campaign.

The other article was on the results of this years International Advertising Festival or Cannes Lions awards. This is THE international award for advertising. This year the festival received 24,242 entries, handing out more than 750 awards. A number of Canadian entries were winners, including one of my favorites – "Arctic Sun" for Tropicana Orange Juice done by BBDO Toronto. View all of the finalists and winners which are posted on the Cannes Lion Award website.

If you are interested in seeing past years winners check out the library's DVD/Video collections, which has holdings for almost every year from 1986-2002.
