Free Vector Graphics Program
A program like Adobe Illustrator, that allows you to create and draw a vector based illustration is super handy, especially if you want to design a poster, store sign, business card and more importantly a logo.
What does vector mean?
Vector illustrations (unlike raster or pixel images) can be scaled and distorted infinitely without loss of quality because it is based on points rather then pixel information. Just think about a graphic for a business card and then trying to put it on a billboard at Dundas Square. With a jpeg, tiff, or bmp file, that simply can’t be done. With an illustration file design in Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, this can easily be accomplished without increasing file size or decreasing image quality. In addition, the file size remains quite compact.

Someone asked me over the summer if I knew of any free, open-source illustration programs. I was sure to find one, but wasn’t 100% sure. I did some snooping around a came across a program called Inkscape.
Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw. It’s very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more. You can download it absolutely free, and runs on both PC and MAC. I’ve tried it out over the past week on my system at home and I have to say it’s quite user-friendly.
Download it for free now, and start drawing.
On another note, I was on the Inkscape website and noticed a link to OpenClipArt Library.
I’ve always enjoyed making fun of Microsoft’s clipart collection, however this new library created by users like yourself is amazing. OpenClipArt Library is the largest collaboration community that create, share and remix cliparts. All cliparts are released to the Public Domain so they can be freely used in any project for free.
