Do you enjoy doing arts & crafts want to minimize waste?

by Diana (Downsview Branch)

As an “artsy craftsy” person, I am always concerned about waste. Whether it's paper or fabric, I always try to use as much of the material as possible. Better yet, if I can re-use/re-purpose leftover material in another project rather than throwing it away/recycling it, I’ll keep it.

Looking through the list of the Culture Days activities, I’m very excited to see that there are “artsy craftsy” activities that focus on recycled materials! Here is a selection of activities in branches across the city on both Friday and Saturday. Have fun!

Culture-days
Bottle Bubbles, a Recycling Workshop  At the Highland Creek Branch artist Ilona Staples will show how to make a small "Bubble" out of 12 pieces of cut-up 2-litre plastic pop bottles transferring waste into very striking and beautiful art. This is a great activity for kids and groups of kids, and adults too. Class visits are welcome. Friday, September 30, 1-3 pm. Bottle Bubbles
Rescue Fabric! Make an Ornament! Ginny Kaner of Butterfly Tree shows participants how to make a brooch, barrette, or ornament using repurposed fabric scraps. There will be prototypes and participants are encouraged to try their own ideas and designs as well.  College Shaw Branch Saturday, October 1, 1:30-4:30. Butterfly Tree

Artmaking and Bookmaking With Recycled Material Artist Micheline Montgomery demonstrates green conscious art making and book making using preloved material. Hands-on workshop with material provided. The only prerequisite is imagination. For adults and children. Mount Pleasant Program Room, Saturday, October 1, 1:30-3:30 pm. You can see more of Micheline's beautiful, richly coloured paintings on her website, Pearlangel Art Studio.
