Maker Festival 2019 Cancellation

We were very sorry to learn of Maker Festival’s decision to cancel this year’s event, which was scheduled for July 6 and 7 at Toronto Reference Library.

In January 2019, TPL updated our programming policy with an emphasis on creating a safe space so that every one, especially the most vulnerable in our community, enjoys a safe space to learn and engage. We’ve made this update in consultation with the City of Toronto, and our policy is aligned with other organizations providing safe spaces for children and youth.

The biggest change to the programming policy is that we are asking external presenters, partners and performers to follow the same expectations as staff and volunteers with respect to vulnerable sector police reference checks. Revisions to the policy are outlined here and further information is provided in this FAQ.

We’ve made every effort to make this as administratively simple as possible while honouring our commitment to safety. Vulnerable sector police reference checks are required for all instructors and volunteers delivering closed-room workshops. Exhibitors and other volunteers, ages 18 and up, are required to sign a free one-page letter of declaration stating that they have not been convicted of any vulnerable population-involved crimes.

We’ve hosted Maker Festival at the Toronto Reference Library from 2014 to 2018, and have enjoyed a positive relationship with the organizers. We’ve let Maker Festival know that we’d be very pleased to host the event later in 2019 or in 2020, and remain hopeful that we can welcome them back.
