Staff Picks: Kill The Boy Band
Boy Bands and their rabid avid fans hold a special place among fans, and the narrator of this novel, a devotee of 80s movie and The Ruperts, is our tour guide into a group of crazy passionate fans known as Strepurs. She and her friends have got themselves close to their beloved quartet, when something goes awry, and they sort of accidentally kidnap one of them. Now what??
When four superfans get their hands on even the least exciting member of their chosen band, no one is quite sure what to do, and each has their own ideas. Mounting mayhem outdoors and the threat of discovery add to the tension until you're not too sure how on earth they could get out of this, making for a page-turning read.
The book is also a great inside look at the phenomenon of fandom at its extreme – including stalking, online threats to girlfriends and other fans, websites tracking celebrities' every move, and why on earth anyone goes this far for a band in the first place. The voice is pitch perfect, talking stans and fanfic, and realistically showing the inside workings of teen obsession from one of the more moderate voices in this small sampling.
This all makes for a great read – light and fluffy, but suspenseful and full of crazy twists and turns. Bet you won't see some of the weirder events coming!
Place a hold on Kill The Boy Band, or read it as an ebook.
