Sports Injuries – Prevention & Treatment

Hockey injuries Exercising and playing sports is good for you but unfortunately it can also lead to injuries. According to Statistics Canada, 35% of all injuries occurred during sports or exercise. Among young people 66% of injuries were sports related as illustrated in this 2009-2010 report.

Stats

Injuries may be due to accidents,  poor training or improper gear. Not warming up or stretching enough can also cause injuries. Common injuries include: sprains and strains, knee injuries, swollen muscles, achilles tendon injuries, pain along the shin bone, fractures and dislocations.

If you get injured, it's best to stop playing or exercising right away. Treatment often begins with the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) method. This helps to relieve pain, reduce swelling and start the healing process. Other possible treatments include anti-inflammatory drugs, immobilization, rehabilitation and sometimes surgery.
