30332_890399146300_6365897_n Are you looking for a fun and social workout that does not involve a treadmill or the gym? Then why not try salsa dancing? I have been taking lessons and have been at it for a few years now, and I find that it is a very fun and actually enjoyable way to get some physical activity and cardio. I have even been known to take part in an amateur salsa competition or two!

Any form of dance is physically, mentally and even physchological beneficial, as it helps burn lots of calories, works up a good sweat, while relieving stress and making social connections all at the same time.

  • salsa can burn around 200-400 calories per half hour
  • tones your muscles
  • helps you lose weight
  • strengthens your body
  • relieves stress- helps you forget your "problems" for a while
  • increases self-confidence (after you have proven to yourself that you have learned something new and gained a new skill)
  • social skills increase
  • new relationships are formed
  • creative self-expression is unleashed

According to a WebMD doctor, exercise physiologist Catherine Cram, MS, of Comprehensive Fitness Consulting in Middleton, Wis., "Dance is a weight-bearing activity, which builds bones. It's also "wonderful" for your upper body and strength"

Of course, as always, consult your doctor if you have any medical condiditon or challenges which may make this activity unsafe for you.
