What do you think of when you see the words "clean eating"? I remember the first time I saw the magazine Clean Eating on the library shelf and I wondered, as opposed to what? Eating dirty food? Eating with dirty hands? I was curious, but not curious enough to look through the magazine. I heard the term again recently, when I finished a cardio work-out and the instructor ended with a reminder to drink lots of water and eat clean. The instructor has a nutrition degree so his use of this term made it seem more legitimate and piqued my interest. A quick search on the Internet, led me to various definitions, but basically, it seems that clean eating means eating whole foods, or foods that haven't been processed much.
As eatingwell.com puts it, "it’s about eating more of the best and healthiest options in each of the food groups—and eating less of the not-so-healthy ones. That means embracing foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains, plus healthy proteins and fats. It also means cutting back on refined grains, added sugars, salt and unhealthy fats." My final take on clean eating? Don't eat junk food or convenience foods. Cook and eat the way your paren'ts or grandparen'ts did. So it turns out I have been eating clean (mostly).

It’s kind of amazing that we’ve strayed so far from eating the way our paren’ts and grandparen’ts did that we need whole books and periodicals to teach us how to go about doing it. I’m happy to see this “trend” taking off – to take us back to better, healthier ways of feeding ourselves and our families.
Everything old is new again…or at least has a new name. Thanks for your comments Cynthia.
