Avoiding scams and job fraud

When people are worried about money or eager to get ahead, they may take more risks and become victims of fraud and scams. Here are some websites with advice about employment scams, fraudulent businesses, fake money-making schemes and identity theft. 

Employment scams are a costly trap for job hunters   The Ontario Ministry of Government Services cautions job hunters not to give money to anyone who promises employment. Be cautious if you are asked to:

  • pay for specialized job training in exchange for "guaranteed" employment
  • pay an upfront fee to a job placement company to obtain a dream job
  • pay an upfront investment fee for a not-to-be-missed business opportunity

  1. While exiting, remember it takes hard work.
    – Avoid any offer that promises you’ll make a lot of money for very little work.
    – Don’t rely on a money-back guarantee. Con artists rarely give money back.
    – Be wary of testimonials or endorsements.
    – See if the Better Business Bureau has a Reliability Report on the company.
    – Never give a credit card, debit card or checking account number to any person or company that promises employment. If they wantyou to pay them it’s a scam!
    – Keep a positive attitude. You are likely to fail a few times before you learn the ropes.
