Finding Part Time Jobs
Looking for a year-round part-time job? The current financial situation has eliminated many full time jobs and more people are either creating their own job (starting a small business) or are working part-time. In June 2009, Stats Canada says that 57,000 part-time jobs were created in Ontario. Other people want a part-time job to supplement their income.
What industries or occupations are good sources of part-time work?
According to JobFutures, these jobs have higher than average percentage of part-time workers:
- customer service reps – financial services
- finance and insurance administration jobs
- landscaping and grounds maintenance contractors
- medical lab technicians
- nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
- photographers
- secretaries (except medical and legal)
- general office jobs (clerical)
Emurse.com has a list of "best" part-time jobs. (Salaries are American but should be similar in Canada.)
Careerbuilder.ca has their list of today's best part-time jobs.
Retirement Jobs lists consultant, teacher, wedding planner, house sitter, and working vacations as good part-time job.
How to find a job:

- JobLoft is a Canadian site for jobs in retail, hospitality and food services – you can select part-time as an option.
- Check the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services job board
- Find more resources for retail jobs in Career Bookmarks.
Try the websites of companies that you would like to work for.
- For example, Le Chateau.has jobs in Toronto posted on their website.
Try a job site that specializes in part-time employment.
- Part-Time.ca lists part-time jobs for Canadians.
Try general purpose job posting sites and limit to part-time.
- Check our previous blog post on job posting sites for finding part-time jobs.
- For example, the website SimplyHired
that lists jobs from other sites. Notice that you can change the
limiters on the search results (left side of the page). - Don't forget the Service Canada job bank. Employers don't have to pay to post their jobs and it is useful for small employers without their own website.
- Craigslist lets you limit your search for part-time. It has separate areas for food / beverage / hospitality jobs. Select other occupations or location.
Check Career Bookmarks for more websites on temporary, contract, telecommuting and other alternative work arrangements.
