Career Focus Canada : A Personal Job Search Guide

s Canada: A Personal Job Search Guide, 5th edition by Helene Martucci Lamarre and Karen McClughan is an essential, easy-to-read guide for anyone looking for a job. It provides advice on self-promotion, networking, resume writing and how to prepare for the interview.
It also includes a brief discussion on social networking. Many people are using social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and LinkedIn to connect to people that they know. However, according to Lamarre & McClughan, "Students are often shocked and appalled at the suggestion that anyone would use these sites for anything other than their intended purpose — for example, for potential employers to check out the character and day-to-day activities of a possible hire."
Jobvite's 2010 Social Recruiting Survey found that 83% of companies are now using or planning to use social media for recruiting. A study by Harris Interactive for CareerBuilder.com also found that many employers rejected a job applicant because of inappropriate photos and content on their social networking site.
Lamarre & McClughan suggest turning your Facebook page into a marketing tool that would impress, and not shock, a potential employer. One idea is to create a blog about something career-related. Bottom line? Be careful what you post on the internet. It could come back to bite you!

Great article. Definitely the whole world is changing the way they communicate with Social Media. However, Social Media is a double edged sword for job seekers. Some employers are making decisions based on Social Media without meeting the prospective employee.
Thanks for the good article.
