Where Do You Read?

Reading to children at bedtime is a wonderful, time-honoured tradition, with many a side benefit. For many paren'ts, it means sitting cozied up together in a child's bed or in a comfy chair, which are both lovely ways to make that time feel special and shared, not to mention being, well, comfy! But those are certainly not the only places to read…

  • My mom used to have a tree with a fork in it that was just right to cradle her as she read during lazy Iowa summers.
  • As a kid, I liked to lie on my stomach just about anywhere to read. Still do sometimes, though being propped up against the arm of a couch or chair is good, too.
  • Leaning against a shady tree in the park was a favourite as a teen.
  • Now, I read on the subway on the way to anywhere – and often as I walk down the street, too, a habit I started on the walk home from school as a kid. (No, I have never walked into a pole.)
  • Librarians I have asked prefer reading in hammocks, on docks and patios, in rocking chairs, and in bed before they turn in for the night (bedtime stories are good for grownups, too!).

As Dr. Seuss said, "The more you read, the more you know," so why not try adding more places and times to your reading repertoire? Whether you're waiting in line, riding on transit, or staying at home, a book makes for fine company. Where is your favourite reading spot?
