How to Choose?

Paren't and Child Reading

With so many amazing books at the library, choosing ones that are a good fit for your child can be a challenge. Here are 5 pointers to help you select your child’s next great read:

  1. Follow your child’s interest. Kids love reading books about things, people and topics that interest them. If your child is interested in a new activity or popular figure, pick out some great books to help broaden their knowledge.
  2. Let your child pick. Chances are, kids are more likely to read a book if they chose it. Let your child browse the shelves and pick out books they want to read.
  3. Pick books you like too. Enthusiasm is important when you are reading aloud to your child. By choosing books you both love, you show excitement when you are reading. When you are not interested in a book, kids can'tell.
  4. Plot Grabber! Read the book jacket to see if the plot grabs your child’s interest. Are they curious about what will happen? Is there a problem to solve? When kids get excited about the book, they will want to finish reading it – which is especially important for kids reading chapter books.
  5. Ask your local librarian! Children’s librarians are experts in choosing and recommending great books for kids. Just ask!

We also have a great TD Summer Reading Club booklist you can check out with reading suggestions for kids of all ages (some of which you can read online).

Happy Reading!
