Benefits from the Adult Literacy Program

Celebrate Family Literacy Day this month by finding fun and interesting ways to read with the whole family.

Did you know that forty-two percent of Canadians have reading, writing and numeracy levels below the level considered necessary for the demands of work and life (Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy, 2014)? The Toronto Public Library offers support to adults who may struggle with their reading and writing skills through the Adult Literacy Program. Through one-on-one support, the Adult Literacy Program provides an opportunity for adults to improve their skills and work towards independence, employment or academic goals. Program participants are matched one on one with volunteers who are there to help.

As part of this program, we provide opportunities to help paren'ts who may be struggling with their literacy skills to become active participants in their children’s journey to learning to read. A family literacy activity doesn’t always have to be a paren't reading to their child.  Other activities can include writing a shopping list, reading a recipe, singing a song or even having your child read to you. Family Literacy can have a great impact on the development of a child.

If you know anyone who can benefit from the Adult Literacy Program, please call us at 416-395-5555 or email us at adultliteracy@torontopubliclibrary.ca.  We’d love to help!
