Let’s Celebrate Family Literacy Day Together!
Family Literacy Day, held on January 27, is a national initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage families to read and engage in literacy-related activities together. In celebration of Family Literacy day, Toronto Public Library offers activities all month long to get children and families excited about reading together.
Family Literacy begins at home, with reading aloud, sharing a love of reading, and building it into everyday activities. Just taking 15 minutes a day to read or do a learning activity with children can improve their literacy skills dramatically.
This month, in celebration we have:
Great Books!
Our expert librarians have complied a recommend reading list of great books to read together as a family and resources about literacy. You can borrow a copy at your local library branch or place a hold on a copy online.
Book Bingo
Children, along with their families and caregivers are encouraged to pick up a Book Bingo card from their local library branch and complete activities related to reading and the library. Once completed, participants can return the cards to library staff to be entered in a draw to win a prize pack of family fun board games and books. Book Bingo runs until the end of the month. Full contest rules are available on contest forms.
Programs
Music shows, storytelling, puppet shows and scavenger hunts are just some of the programs we will be running this month. For information about library programs in celebration of Family Literacy Day, visit our programming page.
Family Literacy Day programming at Toronto Public Library is supported by Friends of Toronto Public Library, South Chapter. For more information, contact your branch or Answerline at 416-393-7131.
