"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…."

If those words prompt you and your kids to picture a field of stars and slow, crawling text with this music playing in the background, chances are good that you've seen a Star Wars movie.

You may also know that Star Wars fans celebrate the franchise on May 4th, using the clever slogan "may the Fourth be with You" to play off of one of the films' most famous catchphrases, "may the force be with you". Beyond borrowing the movies, you can join forces with the library to get in on the Star Wars action, like attending an after-school Star Wars Day program today at Northern District or Fort York, or watching the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars at home.

For kids who just can't get enough of the complex movie sets and props and want to know more about the characters, I recommend the Star Wars cross-section books and visual dictionaries.

Star Wars - Complete Vehicles Star Wars - Head-to-head Tag TeamsStar Wars - Revenge of the Sith

For those who love action and dream of becoming a Jedi, the Star Wars Rebels series or the graphic novellas by Jeremy Barlow will fit the bill. And you can't go wrong with the hilarious, best-selling Jedi Academy series!

Star Wars Rebels - The Rebellion Begins Star Wars Adventures - Princess Leia and the Royal Ransom Jedi Academy - Return of the Padawan

Because no Jedi training is complete without the ability to masterfully wield a lightsaber, your kids will need to practice their intergalactic dueling skills. To get started, grab a pool noodle, duct tape and electrical tape and help your kids craft their own lightsaber.

DIY Lightsaber and Save Han Solo from the Carbonite Experiment

Craft a lightsaber (via Here Comes the Sun) or experiment with science to save Han Solo from carbonite! (via Fun-A-Day)

Kids who have a combined love of Star Wars and LEGO may find saving Han Solo from carbonite to be a real blast. It's a fun science experiment using ingredients you probably already have at home and it doesn't require any Jedi mind tricks to recreate. The library also has LEGO Star Wars movies and books:

Lego Star Wars - The Yoda Chronicles Lego Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Out Lego Star Wars - The Visual Dictionary

Go you must to the library. May the force be with you!
