How Do We Help Our Children Cope?
All children cope differently with the stresses they encounter, depending on their individual personalities and strengths. But all children can benefit from learning to cope and becoming more resilient.
Resiliency is the ability to withstand stress, adversity and loss by working through the emotions and effects of these challenges. It’s something that develops as people grow, gain better thinking and self-management skills and acquire life experience, and is nurtured through supportive relationships with paren'ts, peers, and others. Some of the factors that contribute to resilience include:
- Close relationships with family and friends
- A positive view of yourself and confidence in your strengths and abilities
- The ability to manage strong feelings and impulses
- Good problem-solving and communication skills
- Feeling in control
- Seeking help and resources
- Coping with stress in healthy ways and avoiding harmful coping strategies
- Helping others
- Finding positive meaning in your life despite difficult or traumatic events
Toronto Public Library will be offering Strength-Based Approach to Paren'ting a workshop that includes a toolkit that paren'ts can use to assess their child's development in this area. Dr. Wayne Hammond, an expert in this field, will be delivering the workshop to be held at North York Central Library on December 2nd, in the Concourse (lower level) area from 6:30 to 8 pm. It is a drop-in program, there is no need to register. I hope to see many of you there.
