If you liked The Hunger Games . . .

In a post-war North American near-future, there's an annual televised spectacle where teen "tributes" must fight to the death, and Katniss Everdeen – a kick-ass heroine to rival Lisbeth Salander – rises to the challenge.  If you devoured The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, and are waiting for your holds on Catching Fire and Mockingjay to arrive, you might want to check out any of the following:

Oryxcrake Runningman Theroad

Margaret Atwood can really "do dystopian," complete with genetically altered animals, war, food shortages, cults, and glimpses of hope in the chaos.  Stephen King was writing about the game side of things long before reality TV.  And Cormac McCarthy's novel is so compelling, so horrifying, so despairing yet lyrically spare, that once I'd finished, I immediately turned back to the beginning to read it again.

You can read more about the Hunger Games here and here.  Place your holds now! (Whatever you do, don't get caught up in watching terrible fan-made trailers for the movie, coming in 2012… oh alright – guilty as charged – I agree that Cinna really should be played by Hugh Laurie!)
