ESL paren'ts, unite!
If you are an ESL paren't (like myself) and you are worried that your children might not be sufficiently fluent in English… then don't worry π First of all, DO NOT talk to them in English at home. Young minds are extremely flexible and they do not mind learning more than one language at the time π Not only that, by teaching / maintaining your child your mother tongue you give them a valuable life skill – you increase their capacity to learn and the more languages they know the easier it becomes to learn another one! The language also makes a wonderful paren't-child bond that should always be nurtured.
Just remember, you don't want your child to learn the language in a clumsy way – so it is your responsibility to talk to them in proper, clear words. Do not mix languages; do not throw in English words even if they seem to make the best fit. The good speaking habits that your child will develop in your language; will sooner or later transfer to English. If you need books in a specific language to help you, well, check your library π We have lots of materials on language learning as well!
Over time, your children will become more comfortable with English than you are, and will start correcting you π Actually, at some point it might be a challenge to prevent them from using English only.
Oh, and do not worry about "overload" – human brain is not a computer. Resources are NOT limited π
