ESL paren'ts, unite!

If you are an ESL paren't (like myself) and you are worried that your children might not be sufficiently fluent in English… then don't worry πŸ™‚ First of all, DO NOT talk to them in English at home. Young minds are extremely flexible and they do not mind learning more than one language at the time πŸ™‚ Not only that, by teaching / maintaining your child your mother tongue you give them a valuable life skill – you increase their capacity to learn and the more languages they know the easier it becomes to learn another one! The language also makes a wonderful paren't-child bond that should always be nurtured.

Just remember, you don't want your child to learn the language in a clumsy way – so it is your responsibility to talk to them in proper, clear words. Do not mix languages; do not throw in English words even if they seem to make the best fit. The good speaking habits that your child will develop in your language; will sooner or later transfer to English. If you need books in a specific language to help you, well, check your library πŸ™‚ We have lots of materials on language learning as well!

Over time, your children will become more comfortable with English than you are, and will start correcting you πŸ™‚ Actually, at some point it might be a challenge to prevent them from using English only.

Oh, and do not worry about "overload" – human brain is not a computer. Resources are NOT limited πŸ™‚
