Canadiana improves storage capacity with compact shelving
After the relocation of the Urban Affairs Library last week, the Canadiana collection will benefit by receiving a large section of compact shelving, which will be moved to North York Central's 6th floor. During the installation, portions of Canadiana's collection will be unavailable from September 20 to about October 3, 2011. Affected areas of the collections are held in Canadiana's closed stacks:
- Call Numbers 001 to 819.4
- Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) Periodicals – back issues
- OGS Oversize materials

Compact shelving is used by many libraries, including the stacks at Toronto Reference Library, to store a larger volume of books in the same space that regular fixed shelving uses. Tracks on the floor allow ranges of shelves to move on rollers so that, when not needed for staff to retrieve books, the space between ranges can be closed up using a hand-operated wheel.
Staff can easily open up only the aisles they need to reach specific books. And the risk of being crushed by another staff member who tries to close up the space is extremely low, I am assured!
After the new shelving is installed, Canadiana's stacks will have significantly more space to store our growing collections, specializing in Canadian genealogy, Ontario local history, and the history of North York. Visit us for all your genealogy and local history needs.
