At this time of year my father-in-law used to repeat an old Italian saying: " a San Martino ogni mosto è vino " – by St. Martin's day ( November 11 ) all the grapes are wine. November is the month when wines from this year's harvest are ready to taste, and winemakers and wine lovers get their first indication of the characteristics and quality of the new vintage.

Wine is among the most ancient of beverages and it has played a surprising variety of roles through human history.

It has been a commodity, a currency, spurred trade and colonization, been part of religious rites and celebrations, and  of course it has been considered a source of inspiration for artists, writers and philosophers.
