If you are new to eBooks, here are a few tips to get you started using OverDrive through the Toronto Public Library:

Go to OverDrive homepageFrom the Library's homepage (tpl.ca) click on Downloads & eBooks and then the Access online button under OverDrive eBooks and eAudiobooks, eMusic.

1. To do anything with your OverDrive account (such as place or pick up a hold), sign in with your library card number and pin through Account on OverDrive Homepage, not through Your Account on the main library webpage.

2. An Adobe ID is needed to borrow eBooks on an eReader such as a Kobo Aura.  An Adobe ID is a free account with Adobe (click on Sign In to set up your Account).  It is a good idea to get your Adobe ID before you start installing software.  That way, you will be ready to enter it when prompted during the set up process.

ADE button3. You will need to install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer if you are using a Kobo (except the Kobo Vox or Arc) or a Sony Reader.  Connect your device to your computer before you start the software installation process.  This way, both the device and the computer will be authorized with the same Adobe ID during the set up process, which is required for transferring eBooks.

4. To download eAudiobooks to your computer, download and install the OverDrive Media Console for Windows or Mac.

5. To download both eBooks and eAudiobooks to a mobile device (iPad, iPhone, Android phone or tablet, Windows 8 tablet) use the free OverDrive Media Console app for your device.  The app is available wherever you normally access apps for your device.

6. Pay attention to format.  eBooks are in ePub and PDF formats and eAudiobooks are in WMA and MP3 formats.  Use the device guides in the OverDrive Help website to check which formats will work on your device.
