What’s On at … Northern Elms

On any given day of the week, it is a sure bet that there are not one but many interesting literary and cultural events in Toronto Public Library branches. As the fall season opens, across the city there are literally dozens of author talks, readings, performances, exhibits and thought-provoking lectures on history, science and more. Northern Elms, located on Rexdale Blvd. just east of Kipling, is no exception. Serious TPL watcher Catherine Raine called Northern Elms a "refuge for the strip-mall weary," with a "cosmic appeal" that "transcends gas stations, pharmacies, and parking lots." Here are the branch's fall events–all are free and everyone is welcome.

The Medieval Muslim World's Forgotten Contributions to Science  Tuesday, September 27, at 6:30 pm.

During the eighth and ninth centuries, while Europe was locked in the Dark Ages, Muslim civilization was at its zenith. Were it not for the scientists and thinkers of the medieval Islamic world, the modern world would not have algebra, modern medicine, astronomy and much else. Presented by Dr. Aliya Khan, Professor of Clinical Medicine, McMaster University.
