Building A Smarter, Successful and Resilient Toronto
Hi, I'm Jane Pyper, City Librarian.
It's been an energizing process to work with the Board and staff to develop a vision, themes and goals for the library's new Strategic Plan.
We began with research about Toronto, its changing population and needs, as well as the world in which the library is offering service, including education and technology trends. Based on this information, the Board has endorsed four themes for our new Strategic Plan.
Grow a city of readers: The library will continue to build on its first priority, to champion and support literacy and reading in all its forms. We strongly believe that being an engaged reader is the foundation of life success and an important key to a better quality of life for everyone.
Develop a city of learners: Many Torontonians are in periods of transition – the youngest are transitioning to their first school experience, young adults are transitioning from high school to post-secondary education and then to a first job or business; adults are transitioning between careers, or to retirement. The library wants to help make these transitions easier for everyone through access to information and learning opportunities online and in our 98 branches throughout the city.
Inspire and support a city of innovators, entrepreneurs and creators of all ages: To compete in the global economy, Torontonians must be positioned to develop new ideas and to adapt quickly to change. Our branches need to be accessible and offer space and technology to support work, study and collaboration. Our online services should provide easy and dependable access to information and learning opportunities anytime, anywhere.
Deliver excellent library service to Torontonians efficiently and effectively: In an era of limited resources, the library is committed to delivering excellent, sustainable and efficient service, making the best use of city funds. We want to develop new revenue sources and community partnerships that will enhance the efficient delivery of library services. And we will find more ways to increase the fundraising power of the Toronto Public Library Foundation.
Learn more about these themes and background issues on our website.
Please tell us what you think by:
- Completing our survey online, or in library branches
- Responding to blogs by members of our Board, community and library staff
- Participating in Twitter chats – Look for our schedule of dates later this summer
- Talking to staff at any branch
We look forward to hearing from you.
Updates will be provided on the website throughout the Strategic Plan process.
