Teen Review: Baby Driver
Review by Yasmine, age 16
Baby Driver is a 2017 action-comedy, directed by Edgar Wright. It tells the story of Baby, a young talented getaway driver (played by Ansel Elgort), who lost his paren'ts in a car accident as a child. This accident caused him to develop tinnitus; in order to drown out the ringing noise in his ears, he listens to music on full blast while he’s driving. After meeting Deborah (played by Lily James) a young woman who happens to share his love for music, Baby must choose between ditching his criminal lifestyle or following the girl of his dreams.
First off, my expectations were pretty high going into this movie; I had a couple friends who had seen it already and really enjoyed it. Furthermore, Edgar Wright is one of my favorite directors; he has a very unique way of telling stories through film. In other words, there was no doubt in my mind that I would like this movie.
However, I had no idea that I would LOVE it. Baby Driver BLEW ME AWAY. Every element of the story, from the soundtrack to the cinematography and the choreography, are so meticulously crafted, and Edgar Wright nails every detail. Bearing that in mind, Baby Driver has many Easter eggs hidden in the background; I strongly recommend watching it a second (or even a third time), in order to catch all of them. Additionally, the soundtrack really is the driving force of this movie (pun intended), and every exciting action sequence is accompanied by an equally-exciting song. To be honest, this movie has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard!
Ansel Elgort really shines in this movie, and brings a very endearing and emotional side to a pretty complex and multi-layered character. The solid Baby Driver cast is also made up of Kevin Spacey (one of my favorite actors), Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Eiza González. The film does focus quite a bit on Baby and Deborah’s relationship, but it’s still very intriguing to see the way that these other dynamic characters interact with one another.
This film is, by far, my favourite movie of the year, and probably the most well-edited one of the year. Baby Driver has it all: humour, a banging soundtrack, awesome car chases, and most importantly, very memorable characters. It truly is a very unique and entertaining movie that I think everyone will enjoy.
