Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Celebrates Creative Culture in Libraries

On Oct. 20, join the Ontario Library Association and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for a celebration of Ontario’s public libraries.

The morning will feature an exclusive tour of the Scarborough Civic Centre Branch, Toronto Public Library’s 100th branch, which includes the library’s new Digital Innovation Hub and 3D printing station. Drew Fagan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, will also announce the shortlist for the Public Libraries Service Awards. Every year, the awards recognize excellence and innovation in public libraries across the province.

Ontario Public Library Week serves to highlight how public libraries have evolved to play many roles and services beyond just lending books. Today’s libraries serve as a venue for the inspiration, creation and development of ideas in an increasingly knowledge-based economy. Over 3.7 Ontarians visit public libraries for programs, which can include video/animation courses, early learning programs, social events for seniors, speaker sessions, and health information sessions.

Ontario Public Library Week begins on Oct. 18 and is facilitated by the Ontario Library Association. See a special Ontario Public Library Week message from The Honourable Michael Coteau Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, online.
