What Did We Read Last Week? (2.0)

July 13, 2010 | Alan H. | Comments (37)

I will now interview myself to explain why this wasn't posted on Monday!

AH: Why wasn't this posted on Monday?

AH: For the last week and a bit I've been on vacation in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

AH: Did you have a good time?

AH: Yes!  I went to my cousin's wedding and received roughly 10,000 mosquito bites.

AH: Read anything good while you were there?

AH: Why yes–here it is in convenient point form!

  • Read a couple of collected volumes of "The Incredible Hercules".  We don't have this Marvel series in our collection unfortunately, but it's a fun mix of superheroics and ancient mythology, starring the Marvel version of Hercules (the one in the Avengers) and his teenage sidekick Amadeus Cho (the 7th-smarted person in the world).
  • Spent some time on the plane reading The Terror by Dan Simmons, a historical novel with horror elements based on the lost Franklin expedition.  A very unusual novel–kind of historical fictions meets Alien.
  • I also did a bunch of work-related reading around exciting topics like business analysis techniques and software project management!  I know teens are crazy for that sort of thing.

What did the rest of you read last week?  Good, bad, let us know!

Alan H. is a web librarian with Toronto Public Library.  He currently has roughly 10,000 mosquito bites.

  1. hey alan, nice to know you had a good time (despite the mosquito bites) . last week i finished reading the first book in the house of night series , “Marked”. it’s as really great book about a girl named zoey who gets marked and has to therefore become a vampyre..if she can survive the change. along her journey, she is faced with many obsticales; boy issues, friend issues, teachers, and the dark daughters. read this book and you will want to read the other books as well. its truely an AMAZING novel. i also made a video book review on it. hope you enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚ and happy reading everyone !

  2. Ahaha, I also received a lot of mosquito bites when I went to the countryside.
I’ve read Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Vol.1. I really liked it because it revolved around Chinese Martial Arts and all the cool stuff. I especially liked the fight scenes, and the book was full coloured.

  3. Yeah, those mosquitoes can be a pain.
Anyways, I just finished reading Hunger by Michael Grant. It’s the second book to the Gone trilogy. The book was really intense because disasters were occurring all the time – and sometimes it’s a bunch of disasters at once! The book was hard to put down because it really kept you on the edge of your seat. The only thing I can say against the book is that, for me, most of the characters are either really evil and twisted or their really annoying. I really only like two characters in the book. Still, for anyone who’s up for a good thriller plus a little bit of violence, go ahead and get yourself a copy of Hunger!

  4. I finished reading “Killer” and “Heartless” by Sara Shepard!!!
    they were really good!!! XD

  5. well for this whole week i read at least 4 books. one of them was vladimir tod: eleventh grade burns, another was demon labrinth, and the other was doctor imuniatus. the vladimir tod series is totally awsome u gotta read it. ^_^

  6. I finished reading High School Debut vol. 13, which is the last volume of the series. I can’t believe it’s over so soon. ๐Ÿ™
There’s never a dull moment when Haruna (the main character) is around. She’s hilarious and has a whole bunch of different facial expressions per chapter.

  7. I am fortunate to say that I have not been bitten by a mosquito before =).
I actually finished up a series called the Five Ancestors in which the last book is named “Dragon. ” I started this series a few years ago so I wouldn’t say it’s “entirely” appropriate for adolescents but in the middle of a children and teen read. I found all the books in the series fascinating as each character is named after an animal and their kungfu abilities resemble their animal name. I really enjoyed the series and hope that the author, Jeff Stone, will start to write another series.

  8. Mosquitos bites eh? unfortunately i got some of those too! and believe it or not they itch like crazy!
Yesterday, I finished a book in which I was looking forward to reading for a long while ever since the movie came out, Nicholas Sparks’ Dear John. (I think I wanted to watch the movie mostly because of the actor starring in it, Channing Tatum!). But ever since I found out it was based on a book I resisted the earge to watch it and so I haven’t watched till today! Anyway, the book was really good, it was very heartbreaking and I have to say that I really liked the fact that the narrator was a male. Usually, most books I read are narrated by a female.I really enjoy Sparks’ style, its very intimate and it makes the book feel so real, this book was definitely a page-turner.

  9. Mos…
    Mosquitos bites!!! Ah!!!
Any way I read three books this week “Death by Bikini”, “Death by Latte”, and “Death by Denim” by Linda Gerber. Three books in three days, so proud of myself!!! And I loved these books because it involved mystery, suspense and romance ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. OMG! i loved that book too! I’ve read Marked, Betrayed, Chosen, Untamed, Hunted, Tempted, and Burned. And I’m still waiting for the oh-so long wait of Awakened to come out. My friend and I are counting down the days until we get to finally read Awakened. And while I hope the wait won’t pain me that long, I hope you guys have better luck in reading than me! ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Last week I read “The Christopher Killer” by Alane Ferguson ( it was a pretty good mystery), ” A Curse as Dark as Gold” by Elizabeth C. Bunce ( It was based off the story of Rumpelstiltskin) and “Faithful” by Janet Fox.

  12. I read Frank Herbert’s โ€œDuneโ€, which was really goodโ€“anybody who likes sci-fi/fantasy should definitely read it (especially if you like Lord of the Rings). I also read โ€œOf Mice and Menโ€ by John Steinbeck, which was great. I loved how it was short enough to read in about an hour or two; I always find that books read in one go resonate a lot more.

  13. I’m glad that Alan is back, altho bug bites suck period. I had a friend who needed to get on antibiotics because she had so many. Alan, I hope that you did not suffer a similar fate.
Last week, I read Bel Canto by Ann Panchett. A Latin American government (the book never tells you which one) tries to lure a Japanese CEO to invest in their country by throwing him a lavish birthday party complete with his favourite opera singer. After her final song, the lights go out and a terrorist comes in to take the President away. However the President is at home watching his soap opera instead of being at the dinner.
The rest of the book deals with a handful of hostages and the terrorists group living together in this house and how they come to live together in the end. It’s a very good book, I highly recommend it.

  14. I read Lies: a Gone novel by Michael (the series is really good, I would recommend it to everybody), Pure by Terra Elan McVoy (a story of friendship), Girl Hero by Carrie Jones, Fang: a Maximum Ride novel by James Patterson (this series is amazing… o_o I love, love, love it and everyone should read it), Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink, and Lucky by Rachel Vail.

  15. Lucky!! You got to go to Manitoba ๐Ÿ˜€ Well, I’ve read The Mortal Instruments Series last week. Yes, all three of them in one week. I’m behind on my sleep, definitely. Summer break is starting off really well ๐Ÿ™‚
Now, my opinion on the series. First one (City of Bones) really got my interest, even though I thought it was quite similar to all those teen/ young adult fantasy books these days. You know, the ones about handsome, perfect guys who somehow fall in love with the plain looking- ordinary girl who is actually really extraordinary. Sure, I criticized the book a lot in my head, but I wanted to know all of the deep dark secrets in the book, so I read the rest. I absolutely loathed the main characters (Clary and Jace).
Reason #1: Clary and Jace were so typical and I could tell what was going on almost immediately. You know, another thing about the guy in a typical teen book is that he’s so bored with girls, but he finds the main character so fascinating because… she’s beautiful, smart, whatever…
Reason #2: Annoying!! I was so annoyed by Clary’s so-called obliviousness to her best friends crush on her.
Well, I’ll finish off my rant now. Book 2 (City of Ashes): was much better. More questions, more suspense. Less things that were predictable. Character development and new twists had me captured. And the love triangle was intense even if we know the two characters will obviously end up together. The one character that made me swoon was Alec Lightwood. You heard me right. The homosexual character had me swooning. I have nothing against his sexuality or his jealousy. He was one of the only original characters in the Series (alongside Magnus Bane and Jonathan Morgenstern)
Book 3: Too much confusion. What’s going on? There’s two different third points of view every chapter and I’m wondering what’s going on. All I figured out on my first time reading was that Jace was still being a jerk and Clary was still being recklessly brave.
    – End of Rant –

  16. I read the series too. And the first 3 were really awesome, but I soon lost interest when the author lost the originality in the 4th and so on. Still, it was really awesome ๐Ÿ˜€ I love Damien, who doesn’t love Damien? He’s the funny, sarcastic guy ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. I read TTYL.
It can relate to many students (specifically girls) that go to high school.
The book is about 3 best friends whom make a promise to each other to stick together no matter what happens between them.
But as the year goes on, one girl has boy trouble, another makes a mistake that becomes the latest gossip of the school, and the last one has trouble saying no to a flirty teacher.
Told in a chat room messaging format, this book is one you won’t want to put away!

  18. haha, hope the mosquito bites heal quickly! The most awful (and awkward) place to have a mosquito bite would be anywhere on your bum. My friend has one there and she practices subtle ways of relieving the itch (in public). She’s gotten pretty good at it, that I didn’t even notice she was scratching, until she asked me to hide her this one time, while people walked by.
I read Nothing Like You by Lauren Strasnick and that book reminded me that one lie can lead to never ending heartache… and stress, lots of stress.

  19. Wow Lilly, that was long! I really really enjoyed reading your comment though! And by the way I read the Mortal Instrument series too and guess what, there’s apparen’tly a fourth part to it which I believe is called The City of Fallen Angels. These series were actually one of my favorites and the last book (City of Glass) isn’t actually as confusing as your making it seem i thought it was pretty understandable and stright forward. But anyway I’m glad that you enjoyed it (that is IF you enjoyed it), I guess thats whats most important in the end.Like I said I enjoyed reading your opinion on the novels, I happen to like knowing peoples opinions on books I have previously read, it helps me think more about that book and so on.

  20. I read Revelations: A Blue Bloods novel. I started reading the series when I was really into the vampire genre, but after a few years I grew out of. Surprisingly when I activated my hold for this book I thought I wouldn’t finish reading it, but I did. It was a quick read and more satisfying than I thought.
I was also reading Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov but I couldn’t handle the subject matter even though it was humorous. I’ll just wait a few years and I’ll finish it then. xD”

  21. Last week I read the final book Luxe series, Splendor by Anna Godbersen. What an end! A great series that is not to be missed ๐Ÿ™‚
and read the final book of the A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy by Libba Bray. Lovely series aswell. Heard that there was a movie of it in the works.

  22. last week i read maximum ride: the angel experiment by james patterson. i read the graphic novel first, then i read the novel. its such a good book!

  23. Yup! I just learned of it today :D…I was jumping around excited >///<' I'm really looking forward to the cast, and the fashion & setting!! victorian era is one of my fave time periods :3

  24. I’m in the middle of reading Zazoo, which is about an adopted Vietnamese girl who grew up in France. The story starts off with the visit of a mysterious boy whose questions trigger the curiosity of Zazoo. Intrigued, she digs deeper for the answers from her grandfather and the local pharmacist, which leads to the unraveling of secrets from the past in regards to WWII.
The premise sounds interesting enough, which is exactly how it caught my attention. My high expectations, however, were shot down as I read further into the book. The author focuses a great deal on the details of scenary, which I’m sure is appealing to some, but that is lost on me, as I’m definately one for the plot. The story is slow-moving and there’s very little progression. I’m halfway through and slowly losing patience. The protagonist is underdeveloped and everything she does and say is dull. There is no substance, which frustrates me.
I also hoped that the author would write a little about Zazoo’s role in her community and how she’s viewed in the society she lives in. She’s physically different from everyone around her, seeing as she’s Vietnamese, so inevitably, her experience growing up wasn’t of the typical French child. There’s none of that so far, much to my disappointment.
To be frank, the book has become a chore to read so I’ve started on a new novel today, called “Come, Thou Tortoise”, which from the reviews I’ve read, promises to be funny and entertaining, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m hoping it’ll deliver more than Zazoo.

  25. I actually enjoyed the first book in the Luxe series, which surprised me, considering I usually don’t read those kind of books.
However, I guess my expectations for the second one was too high, for I really disliked it. It was annoying to read so I just gave up less than halfway through. It was cheesy and simply too predictable.
The covers are absolutely gorgeous though-every single one of them ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. A great book I read last week was Love You Hate You Miss You. This is a great touching book about friendship as the main character of the book; Amy has to go on with her life despite the fact that her best friend Julie is dead. This book leaves you thinking that you should be grateful for your friends as they are a gift.

  27. A great book I read last week, was one I actually read again.
Its called “A Walk to Remember” by Nicholas Sparks.
I am a big fan of all of his work, and I think he is a phonemenal writer. The book was truely heartwarming, It was about love, and how one must overcome all of nature’s challenges. It truely is a challenge when Jamie gets lukemia, and Landon miserably in love with Jamie can do nothing to help her. Both landon and Jamie are highschool students! At the end of the book. I felt a sense of relief at my well being and I was bawling because Jamie dies!
The end was a sad and memorable experience! ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Omg i absolutely luved that book. It’s so addicting and it’s kind of refers to some thing that would happen in your every day life, except for the hole vampire thing.

  29. well i hope u had a good time except for the mosquito bites. I read wings, cringe fringe, shadow land, and the awakening last week. they were all really gud books i enjoyed.

  30. I’m complete opposite of u! i love the good-looking guy falling in love with the ordinary but actually pretty girl who always says that she’s not!!
i love jace but i am annoyed of clary, she just sometimes tick me off.. like her baby tantrum.. and like with what u said bout simon…!!! Urghhh
but ur critize for the first book really sum up pretty good bout how sexy guy fall for ordinary but extradoridary girl lol
and i’m really into the dark secretss… i’m more of the romance type!!

  31. Book 2: i thought it was the worst of the series..
i think number 2 always sucks..just like New moon is the worst movie in twilight series!!!
k back to city of ashes: it had me confused a lot of times and just a question what does original mean like u said original character…i absolutely hated Alec cuz he stood no chance against clary.. and i think book2 is about the sword?? and like i hated the part where Jace kinda was in a league with his father Valentine.. like it described Jace so weak as if he would actually believe all those crap that Valentine fed him…unconceivable

  32. Third book was good.. but i think the ending came too fast they should make the part about where Jace and Clary knew they are not sister and brothers longer like how they united and more conversations

  33. wow so many big words in ur comment lol
u know they made the movie into a movie go check it out
and Mandy moore is the woman who casts as Jamie… she’s a singer

  34. A book that i’m reading is Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella, i’m still reading it right now. It’s about how a girl loses her memories and woke to find herself in a perfect tan body, a multimillionare husband and a great job but she doesn’t remember cuz apparen’tly she had been in a car accident and she lost her previous 3 years of memories.. and the biggest of all is that this dark haired artichect is telling her that they’re loves!! oh i love this author and the personality in this book ,,, she is so funny and real..

  35. last week i finished radnig ‘Tis by Frank Mccourt i started reading you and the pirates by jocelyn allen
its pretty funny because the protagonist of the book is You and i mean that literally the author was pretty clever in doing that
the plotline is pretty random and funny and a welcome change to the regular books
sorry to hear about the 10 000 mosquit bites, those little buggers must really love ur blood
    XD
