How Can You Tackle Sexual Harassment in the Workplace?

July 12, 2010 | Elle | Comments (0)

Recent Toronto Star newspaper coverage detailed a case where a young black woman was subjected to sexual harassment and racial taunts at her workplace, Toronto Western Hospital. Her complaints fell on deaf ears for 16 months and it was only when a senior manager heard about it, was a formal investigation launched and that is when this inappropriate conduct came to light.

It is really disheartening to hear about such conduct in this day and age! What can you do if you experience similar harassment? First of all, do not ignore it, even if you are a new employee. You should carefully review any discrimination/harassment policies implemented in your workplace and follow their protocol. It may even turn out to be a case of human rights violation!

In case you did not know, the Ontario government recently amended the Occupational Health and Safety Act (These amendments came into force on July 1, 2010.) and now employers in Ontario have a legal obligation to formulate policies addressing workplace harassment and violence.
