High School Confidential
Unlike Luke who is the main character in Surface Tension, I’m not that big of a fan of going to the cottage. I guess I enjoy life in the city a bit too much to really get into the spirit of things at the lake. But despite the fact that the book takes place at a cottage over four summers, I found that I easily related to Luke’s story because his growth from a still boyish 13 year old to a more knowing 16 year old reminded me of me during high school. Like Luke, I remember still really liking hanging out with my paren'ts at 13. And, if I’m being completely honest, I think, at 13, I was still at that phase where I took a lot of my self-image from my paren'ts’ cues. And then a few years passed, and I found myself at sixteen and seventeen still getting along with my paren'ts but more independent. I was also really busy sorting out who I thought I was. I’m not sure how aware I was that I was changing and maturing. I guess I was aware of it to some degree. I remember feeling like grade 10 was hugely different from grade 9 because, at that point, I had developed “better” taste in music and had made some different friends as a result. I also remember feeling like, maybe, life was a bit bigger than I had thought when my best friend got a car and drove us downtown from the suburbs. We didn’t do anything crazy. We mostly shopped and ate at sushi restaurants, but I still got a rush.
Do you feel like who you are now is very different from who you were a year ago? If you were writing a book, like Surface Tension, that looks back at your high school years, what would you write about?

I am not in high school yet, but will be soon in September. I guess there will be changes from being a 13 year old to a 14 year old! I can’t really say I am positive because I haven’t been through that stage yet.
I’m not even ready to go to high school. Another year to wait for me. D:
I’m not sure how I am. I don’t THINK I’m that different, but if I look closer, I probably am. I just don’t think I’ve changed so much to be able to recognize the differences. But if I were writing a book that goes through high school, it’d probably be a lot about my friends and teachers, because you interact the most with them, right?
How do you feel about starting high school? Excited, nervous? Will your friends from middle school be going with you? I found that while a lot of things were different, such as how much bigger the actual school building was in comparison, it also felt largely the same (homework, many of the same friends, etc.) Hope all goes smoothly for you!
Yes, high school did seem to revolve a lot around friends. One thing I found was that my friends and I started branching off in our own directions and that was sometimes a source of stress but it also broadened our horizons.
I definitely know what you’re talking about ! I feel like I’ve changed more in the last 3 years than ever before, and I’m not even in high school yet ! It’s mostly because I move a lot, so every time I find myself in a different school I sort of adapt to my surroundings and my group of friends, it seems people have quite an effect on me. Next year HIGH SCHOOL ! Who knows what I’ll be like then ?
It sounds like you adapt well to changes, so high school will be another opportunity to get into the flow of things and develop yourself further.
I am mostly feeling nervous about starting high school, since I have moved and none of my friends from middle school will be attending the same school. But I am excited at the same time because high school marks a big point in your life, since you expand in your circle of friends and decide what you want to do with your life! Making new friends will be a challenge, but it will be fun at the same time.
Hopefully, youll find a group of people with common interests and outlook that you can gel with. Glad to hear that youre excited about September!
High school next year!
High school can definitely be scary!I know I was.Well, intimidated was more like it.;)Good luck to everyone starting high school next year!
Gaining and losing friends, different academic expectations, more freedom, nights of partying hardy =) And so many fees!
Yes I totally agree! High School changes you and makes you better every year. Grade 10 was drastically different from grade 9. I changed from a very shy and quiet person to a leader like and outgoing person. I became more active in the school and made more friends!
well besides high school i think middle school changes you to you become more aware of your social life and who your friends with… it becomes way more dramatic not just you took my candy fight rumors and more but high school and middle school can be fun or a flunk but that depends on the person im gonna enter grade 8 in the fall and the idea of im half way through my school life is really hitting me and im starting to think of my career and etc…. well thts just my opinion
i am already in high school and when i was 13 going to 14, it really change me a lot where you get to meet your teachers and meet new people and join clubs and have the freedom to run around in the halls to their classes. However, it’s a change for me when i got out of middle school and then go to high school is like a big leap to go and then go to either college, universtiy, or a career. But, high school gets the freedom on what courses you want to take and be happy with them.
I am also going to high school this September, but I have changed drastically since grade seven. In grade seven, I was embarassed to make a difference. I was always trying to blend in with the crowd. Now that I have broken away, I am getting published soon. 😀
I am currently in high school. In my experience I found that everyone around me made a big deal about high school when I was younger even my middle school teachers. However, in reality it’s nothing to be too nercous about. Sure at first it’s a little overwhelming but you get used to all of it pretty fast. Even if your worried that you don’t know anyone, it’s okay because there’s a chance that there’s someone who feels the same way. Grade 9 is the best year to make new friends.
I am too currently in high school. I found thet ive changed alot. ive started becoming independent( and not shy) and working hard in school than i did before.Even though i was very nervous starting high scool and meeting new people and new teachers i realized it was fun. Overall i changed alot and in a better way!
Waah, I feel like a grandma. It sounds to me like the majority of who have commented so far are either about to enter high school or have just started. I, on the other hand, am returning as a senior in September… >< I love the awkwardness of high school. It's a four year milestone. Good luck to everyone starting high school soon 🙂 Soon, you'll be in my position, getting ready to determine what to do after you graduate.
I’m nervous about going to high school…since I watched so many movies about high school having EVIL PEOPLE. But I guess it’s not as bad as it seem~! ^^
(Still nervous about september^^)
The first few months of high school marked a really awkward period for me. In terms of conversation topics as well as behavior, I felt really immature compared to those in the upper grades.
After two years, I can’t say I’ve grown up completely nor have I become…less awkward but I guess, like Violet said, it’s all part of the high school experience. Between my school and I, it’s totally a love-hate relationship.
For those of you entering grade 9,I assure you it’s not like the cliche high school movies you see. There’s nothing to fear. Really. Sure, you’ll be bombarded by homework and the scheduling system will confuse you but you’ll get used to it. It becomes a way of life.
