Random Book Prize Opportunity : Judging Books by Their Covers

August 16, 2010 | Alan H. | Comments (28)

4:00 pm, Monday August 23 – This contest is now closed.  Winners will be contacted shortly!

We're always told not to judge books by their covers.  But I think we do this all the time anyway.  Here's your chance to do so and win prizes!

We've got copies of all three of the books whose covers are below.  For a chance to win one of them, just tell us which book you'd most like to read based on the cover.

Three of you will win a copy of one of the books (not necessarily the one you write about… it's important not to judge books by their covers, after all, and you might end up enjoying something you didn't expect!)

Call Me Mimi
Francis Chalifour
The Gryphon Project
Carrie Mac
Hell's Hotel
Lesley Choyce
Callmemimi Gryphonproject Hellshotel

This contest will close on Monday, August 23 (a week from today).

Alan H. is a web librarian at Toronto Public Library.  He doesn't judge books by their covers, unless they're very shiny or have that fancy raised lettering.

  1. I’d choose Hell’s Hotel because the cover really caught my attention with the title in big bright letters it makes me want to know what’s the book’s about!

  2. I would want to read Hell’s Hotel because it looks so mysterious and intruding. I’ve always been interested the books about dark things. I have a good hunch that this hotel is gonna be the downfall for the girl on the cover.

  3. I would choose Hell’s Hotel because the character on the cover looks so dark and mysterious. The title also makes me wonder what’s going on in that hotel. 🙂

  4. Alright – so I hate to admit it but I am SOOOO guilty of doing this. Like right now I can’tell you I totally wouldn’t read the pink cover book. Mimi looks a bit too princessy for me. The third book looks a bit better with a girl with attitude on the cover but the one on the middle is definitely the one that I would read first. First because it’s so different. Second because I already have read it and loved the plot twists. Third – I love anything that takes place in the future and the cover (if I Hadn’t already read the book) told me that it was sci-fi. But since I already read it I’d go with Hell’s Hotel. Love my main characters to be strong independent women.

  5. I think i would like to read Hell’s Hotel, it just seems that there’s more going on in the book and it makes me interested in reading it.

  6. I think that the most visually appealing book for me out of the three books would have to be Call Me Mini. I have read some of the comments, in which they have stated that Call Me Mini was too girly or too pink. But for me personally, the other two books were just a bit too strange looking for me. The Gryphon Project looks too serious and Hell’s Hotel seems to be stating the obvious with the flames. So, even though Call Me Mini seems a bit too girly with its pink cover, I think it seems the most appealing to me.

  7. I would read the Gryphon Progect just because it seemes supernatural and mysterious which i normally find interesting already

  8. I think call me Mimi would be interesting and i’m not really into those horror books like Hells hotel. But the Gyrphon project looks like those natural kind of books i guess would also be interesting but Call me Mimi would make a great 1st book for those kind of princessy girly books ahaha

  9. The Gryphon Project, it gave me a buncha ideas about mad scientists making gryphons…don’t ask me why.
otherwise Hells hotel i like the flames they look like tattoos
    😀

  10. Based on the covers, I would want to read The Gryphon Project because it looks like and from what I’ve gathered from the comments that its a science fiction book about making some new creature, with plot twists. I like it when the ending of the book isn’t very predictable so it can keep me guessing. Call Me Mimi seems like it has a predictable ending and not a very complex plot while the Hell’s Hotel seems kind of miserable and that the ending will mostly likely not end happily.

  11. I would prefer reading The Gryphon Project. My opinion is based on the fact that the cover gives away that it might be science fiction, horror or mystery. And I prefer all of those genres.

  12. The Gryphon Project looks like it could be the first in a series, sci-fi no doubt. However, there’s a good chance there may be supernatural elements, which may be what “Gryphon” is alluding to.
The book’s dark colour scheme suggests a sombre tale, something I’ve been itching for. There probably isn’t a strong romantic lead in this book…
I’m assuming the man on the cover is the protagonist. He looks rather brooding.
I’d definitely read this book, looks like a a driven, serious tale involving either two of my loves, technology or magic.

  13. At first glance I’d probably pick up The Gryphon Project just because the title are my key words to mystery, adventure and fantasy. I usually judge the title, then the cover, then the summary on the back. After looking at each cover carefully and trying to get a sense of each book, I’d probably still pick The Gryphon Project to read the summary on the back. 8D;

  14. Basically just from judging the covers as art contest entries, I would pick The Gryphon Project because it looks the most mysterious out of the three. The others are too in-your-face and look like less effort has been put in somehow.

  15. the way his hair rades into the background makes me wonder if it’s about a ghost. the super natural has always been my thing so this is my book!

  16. I would like to read Hell’s Hotel because the cover is black. Black is my favourite colour. Gryphon Project seems like a book on fantasy and fantasy is just not my thing. Hell’s Hotel seems creepy and mysterious and I am really looking forward to reading it. And then call me Mimi seems like a princessy story not meant for me.

  17. I would like to choose “Call Me Mimi”. The cover of that book is really cute! and I think it’s going to be a good story to inside there!

  18. I’d pick Carrie Mac’s “The Gryphon Project”, which I’m guessing is either some sort of dark fantasy novel (“gryphon” is just another spelling of “griffin” after all) or science fiction. I’m leaning more towards sci-fi because of the word “Project” in the title, as well as the tube-like things on the cover.
Either way, the cover is cool. Plus the guy on the front isn’t looking at us, which makes it all the more intriguing.

  19. I would most likely read Hell’s Hotel because the cover suits the kind of books i like to read. A girl, mysterious, darknesss, the design and so on.
I would most definately NOT read Call Me Mimi because it is pink…and it is so princessy.
The book in the middle looks okay but out of all three I would prefer to read the third book =)
Well, that is my opinion, and everybody has their own.

  20. would choose the book ‘Call me Mimi’ because it’s looks very interesting…and looks pretty funny ( especially when that girl with funny hairstyle is just standing there ‘trying’ to look like a princess..)
BTW, it also looks kind of mysterious, due to the fact the cover doesn’t show her full picture, and it’s the only one like that. That’s what makes me curious!
So, there u have it…I would like to read ‘Call me Mimi’.

  21. If I were to choose one of these books based on their covers, I would choose Hell’s Hotel. This is due to various reasons. First of all, since my favourite book genre is horror, Hell’s Hotel would seem the best choice. If a word like “Hell” is in a title of a book, it tells you that there is a horror aspect in the book because there is a strong reason why the author chose that word to be in the book’s title. Not only that, but the title is in red print with the rest of the cover in black and gray; therefore giving the book cover a gloomy style, even with the gray stuff on the girl. From experience, the horror books I have read have a dark style indicating that they are none other than horror books.
I wouldn’t choose Call Me Mimi because to me it just seems one of those “popularity” or “being popular” books and I am not exactly into those types of books. The girl on the cover is wearing a tiara, thus indicating that this girl is popular or wants to be popular. In addition, as mentioned before the cover is pink/magenta. The Gryphon project won’t be my choice either because I am not the fantasy/science-fiction genre fan either. I can’tell it has to do with science-fiction and/or fantasy because a gryphon or griffin is a winged monster with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion (can also be seen on the cover). I am more of a person who likes reading horror/thriller books.
In other words, I am not sure if Hell’s Hotel is actually a horror/thriller book, but out of the three books based on their covers, I would choose it.
