The cover represents every teen who has ever set foot inside of a kitchen.
This book is an excellent beginner’s guide to cooking, because the way the author writes, she makes it seem as if someone is talking to you in plain simple easy to understand language. I really find it an enormous help that the author has separate simple recipes, like “basic bread recipe”, or “simple white sauce”. This way we readers can use these elements in other recipes. It sort of like a shoe that has lots of detachable accessories that we can’take off or put on, therefor changing it each time, while saving money and time. The recipes are very easy to understand and the ingredients used are very common and often found in a household. Another really great thing about this cook book is how in brackets the author gives little thoughts on what to do as well as lots of tips. The author is very reasonable and doesn’t expect us to buy lots of expensive brand name products, rather she encourages cheap and inexpensive on sale items, especially those that are normally higher priced. The recipes are very well organized, all the meatballs are together, all the stews are together, and what’s more, the recipe names are down to earth and straight to the point. This is a great cook book for all people who would love a beginner’s entrance into the world of cooking.
I was very pleased with Clueless In the kitchen by Evelyn Raab and I found it not only entertaining but also very educational. I must admit this is the first cook book I have ever read and so I don’t really have anything to compare it to but if they all are written as well as this one then I might have to borrow a few more! I loved the fact that it was not so structured and was just recipe after recipe but it had a fluidity that really made it seem much more like a novel. I found the instructions easy to follow and the dishes were simple and quick which is something I need cooking to be. I actually did try out some of the recipes such as the “whole wheat blueberry yogurt pancakes”, “Quesadillas” and the “breakfast smoothie”. They all turned out amazing and I’m very happy with how easy the process was. Other interesting information that the cook book gives which is particularly useful for teens are alternative ingredients because we usually have tight budgets and it’s easier to use what’s in the fridge rather than going out and buying them. I also enjoyed the fact that Raab included a “how to shop” guide which really helps if you are just getting started in the realm that is the kitchen. Another great quality about this cook book is that not only does it teach you how to make shepherd’s pie and pasta but it also has instructions on how to make an omelet and smoothies; things that are simple but are so important to know. Recommend this book to all cooking beginners!
