Mythology - StarcrossedStarcrossed / Dreamless / Goddess

By Josephine Angelini (2011)

When shy sixteen-year-old Helen Hamilton starts having vivid dreams
about three ancient, hideous women and suddenly tries to kill a new
student at her Nantucket high school, she discovers that she is playing
out some version of an old tale involving Helen of Troy, the Three
Furies, and a mythic battle.

Thus begins the Starcrossed trilogy.

  1. HOLY COW!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!! I cannot put into words how much I love this book!!!!! I love the plot, how a gorgeous girl is the reincarnation of Helen of Troy, and Luke, oh god, Luke. Nothing in this world can describe how amazingly spectacular he is. As soon as Helen and Luke met, even though they hated each other, I could feel just how powerful the chemistry between them was so powerful, it felt like someone punched me in the stomach. I really like it when the guy has to come and chase the girl, and because of how hostile Luke was to Helen, he really got his work cut out for him winning her back, and the most romantic thing? They still couldn’t resist each other and constantly fell into each other’s paths despite the fact that the furies were trying to make them hate each other. Finally when Luke saved Helen from dying, the curse was lifted just for Helen and Luke, I was sooooo happy!! But then, if they got together it might mean a war like the war of Troy. I was dying for the second book and when it came, I was like NOOOO!!!! Luke and Helen couldn’t possibly be related. I hated her mom for making them thinking that they were even though they weren’t because she was born after 9 months after Luke’s uncle died. I am SO EXCITED to finally read goddess, although after the last book, I’m probably going to curl up in a ball and stay there for a month. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERYONE!!!! IT’S JUST SO SPECTACULAR THAT IT SATISFIES ALL READING PREFERENCES!!!!!!!

  2. Starcrossed by Angelini describes a normal teenage girl living in a small town. When a family of extraordinarily talented demigods move into Helen’s small world, it turns out that she find herself none other than a demigod as well. Although I did enjoy this novel it really wasn’t anything special, your average generic romance/mythical novel. I found the plot to be somewhat predictable and the whole vibe and feel of the novel was dark, haunting and somewhat depressing. There were countless “cheesy” and cliché moments that I found myself cringing to and the writing doesn’t have much depth. Initially, I remember thinking how fast paced and exciting the book was but as a got to the middle, things started slowing down and I actually had to force myself to finish it. There honestly wasn’t much of a plot at all throughout the entire book, probably because this is the first in a trilogy but never the less, it just kept on dragging on and on with unnecessary details and became incredibly dull. With that being said, I did go through the book fairly quickly and I wouldn’t say I regret reading it. It’s not the worst book ever and if you are a romantic book enthusiast then I do suggest you pick this book up and give it a try. If you liked “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer, this book is right up your alley having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed twilight and this book was simply not up to par. I think that this book was nothing spectacular but was definitely a cute read.
