I found Starling really fascinating because this novel had a little more complexity compared to Lesley Livingston’s other novels (but I still loved the Wondrous Strange series).
I loved the re-introduction of Fennrys Wolf, but I am still a little annoyed with Livingston’s heroines that have a really strong overall personality, but still depend on the guys in their life.
Yet, the combination of fencing, Norse mythology, and the setting (New York just seems to be a really interesting place (no, i don’t travel much)) mix well enough to make me look forward to the next book in the series.
Ohhhh, Seems interesting!!!!!!!!!!
While reading starling by Lesley Livingston I really enjoyed that fact that although it is supernatural and there are things in it that are purely imaginative (hopefully) there is also an extremely approachable and relatable quality to how it was written. I also liked the fact that there were so many different perspectives given in the novel and there were more than one person’s thoughts and opinions. However with all that being said, there was nothing really special about this book and nothing set it apart from the other mythical books I have read in the past. There was the romance, the love triangle, the normal girl who suddenly discovers she has super powers and that her and her family must save the world together. All of this has been done before in other novels I have read and in a week I will have forgotten all about this book. As for say how the actual literature of the book goes, I was a bit confused. Even though I liked what Livingston was trying to do with all the different perspectives it was really all over the place and hard to follow because the voice changed randomly and there was no signal or pattern to follow as which person we were with at that particular moment. I have to say that I tried really hard to like this novel but the truth is; there is not a lot to say about it. Yes, it was a good book and I don’t regret reading it but there are so many other novels that I would much rather be reading, ones with a lot more impact.
This book was phenomenal. It is such a fresh and original idea of the end of the world. Most books that talk about the apocalypse are very bloody and gory. They sort of give me an unclean sort of uncomfortable feeling, but Lesley Livingston was able to magically infuse romance, the idea of the end of the world and different types of gods and goddesses all in one. I really love how the author is able to really express the love between Mason and Fenn that is almost at a Bella and Edward level, while also making sure that the readers are aware of the situation with the end of the world and the weird creatures that are suddenly attacking the earth. I thought it was a really new twist on how the fairy world is the thing that is going to destroy earth because normally in other books, the two worlds leave each other be, or the earth is dominating. In the beginning I really liked Calum’s personality because he was so easy going and friendly towards Mase, but as the book progressed, his personality became darker because he was overwhelmed with the jealousy that he felt and I really didn’t like him when he was the reason why Mase lost the first bout, although I really felt bad for him, because he is so in love with Mason. I really hope that Heather and Calum end up together because both of them are characters that I actually feel would really be a positive influence in the future of the next books.
