Punk Rock and more…
One of my favourite books on the recommended music list is Punk Rock and Trailer Parks. The Baron, the main character, is pretty epic in his transition from band geek to punk rocker and his own hangover with the punk scene's demise. A bit raunchy and rude, it is the essence of summer.
Punk. There's so much history and meaning…punk means so many different things – music, fashion, way of life and attitude.
So what is punk?
Old school punk is…full of expletives…but also full of that spirit.
Here's the Canadian take on punk:
And a Joe Sacco's very raunchy existence as a punk band's cartoonist on a tour of Europe in the 80s:
And in case you want to make your own band cooperate and work (and not barf on each other) totally recommend:
And….here's a funny video on the art + music of Black Flag.
And some straight-up Black Flag:
Iggy Pop!
Of course, there's TONS more…what's your favourite punk? What is punk to you?

I don’t dress punk-like and don’t listen to punk music or anything, but I never totally understood what the word “punk” really meant or symbolized, but do you think a trait of a punk is being rebellious?
I on occasion act rebellious and break the rules, and am therefore called a punk because of those actions, and it always confuses me a little
I fully agree. I have heard old ladies screaming out “PUNK!” at rebellious teens
I sorta think of punk as being akin to free-spirit – like questioning authority, being critical of social constructs and also having a burning desire to experience life. I think it’s pretty open to how you interpret it and adapt it. I always thought, since punk as a movement is countercultural, it’s a bit ironic that everyone turns out dressing the same (mohawks, piercings, etc.).
Anybody can be punk and not ‘look’ that way – I think it’s about that spirit and lust for life, and challenging things/people that put you down. What do you think?
Frank Turner says it well in this chorus:

What’s your experience with the idea or notion of punk?
That’s pretty funny, really. I guess the old ladies forgot that once upon a time they too were teens…unless….
I think it’s a lifestyle and a way of thinking. I thought it was also listening to punk music, dressing punk and all that stuff. I am okay with questioning authority because sometimes that’s how we learn and challenge others in the way they think about stuff. You have to do it in a way that is not offensive or hurtful. I am not punk but everyone is entitled to be who they are.
I like punk rock music. It has its own lifestyles like goth or an otaku
