Vampires, Humans, and Love??
The supernatural/sci-fi genre has blown up big time in the past few years,
both in books and movies, especially when it comes to Vampires. Although we had
Dracula and Interview with a Vampire way back when, to me it seems that the Twilight series reached insane heights
of popularity and opened up the doors for many more books in this genre. These books are not just being turned into
movies, they are also being turned into TV series, such as The Vampire Diaries and for an older crowd, True Blood, so that fans can follow along on a continuous basis. There
seems to be something intriguing about a vulnerable human being who can raise
such humanly feeling in her (or his) technically ‘inhumane by nature’ counterpart
and at the same time, exert this power over them when it should be the other
way around.
The interesting thing is that either you love them, or don’t. I have met
very few people who are neutral; either you are diehard fan, or you despise
anything having to do with them. What do you guys think? Why are there these
two extremes? For those that have read the books, watched the movies, or both,
where do you stand?

Personally, I am neutral about this situation. I believe that this topic is popular amongst many people because it discusses a rare topic. For many years, vampires were portrayed as creepy creatures who suck blood from human beings. By ignoring this stereotype, it creates an interest. As a result, this genre has become popular.
I also remain neutral in this debate. I have read several books with vampires in them, and find that the most popular are unfortunately trashy romance novels (not nessecarily the Twilight saga, just in general). Sigh. Remember when the aspect of forbidden love was original? Thus, these bloodsucking creatures have been labelled with a shallow reputation. I think that many people have trouble not associating everything that happens to be in a bad book or movie with garbage, hence why certain people hate, hate, hate supernatural romance. Others have either read good literature and seen good movies with vampires and want to break the new stereotype, while others simpply live the genre. Personally, I am tired of stories about the supernatural, as it seems that anyone can get away with publiishing their work, regardless of the quality of writing, as long as it has attractive monsters and romance. I would recommend reading the original Dracula; it’s quite creepy and tragic.
I’m actually pretty neutral. I’ve gone through different stages of being totally obsessed with Twilight to hating it with every fiber of my being.
Admittedly, I’m pretty sick of it, and I think that with the final instalment of the Twilight movies the quality drastically decreased (I really hated it).
It has merits and flaws as well. As long as people aren’t obsessed with either loving or hating the franchise, I can definitely see why people would feel the way they do about it.
In my opinion, the genre is ok I suppose… But almost all the books and movies featured are romance. That really becomes annoying, especially Twilight. All the forbidden love nonsense. However, the idea of a vampire in fictional literature seem pretty interesting.
personally i love vampire diaries but don’t really show any interest in twilight but i guess it’s a topic that is becoming more famous nowadays.
Personally, I think that no one really hates the books, there actually nice, what people hate is usually the hype, its the same reason people hate Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, because there are people that are obsessed with it, however the hatred towards it is more annoying then the obsession.
I used to love Twilight, but then the movies came out, and I was really disappointed. I have only seen the first movie and I felt it was terrible, I hear the rest are much better but I haven’t watched them.
What I loved about Twilight was that it was about a girl who initially felt less than ordinary to finding herself, and feeling powerful and finding her self-worth. Although there were a few parts I didn’t like about Twilight, like Bella’s obsession with Edward but it was still a good read. 🙂
I love to hate vampires.
human+wolf=Jacob.
Twilight and others like it (not limited to literature, but also television, films, video games e.t.c)tend to take the “dark horse” brooding male protagonist too far, as an excuse for the lack of any actual character development. I realize that “humanizing” other-worldly creatues (vampires, werewolves and what not) is a popular element in literary drama, and can allow for dynamic, thought-provoking storytelling pondering on philosophical arguments on ethics, morality, or what it means to be human, so it’s a shame that authors almost never take route, and when some thought-provoking themes are introduced into the narrative there is an absolute lack of subtlety in its deliverance. I don’t detest the archetype as much how do it is implemented in a narrative. I think the reason there are two extremes in regards to opinions on Twilight is because to the people that don’t like or appreciate it (i.e: me, if it wasn’t clear enough)it may seem to be profoundly repulsive, and to those that do like/ the probable target audience it is seen as a hallmark of literary excellence, or subject to similar praise, there can be no middle-ground, since it can either be terrible or absolutely stellar, this probably because the author’s approach to storytelling may be somewhat single minded (which isn’t neccessarily a bad thing) subsequently for the people who do like Twilight, they will be treated with narrative elements repeatedly, while those that don’t like will be treated to catslyst of their criticisms, inspiring either profound admiration or intense hatred.
Ok I have read Interview with a Vampire- it was ok.
I watched all Twilight movies and read all Twilight books- i loved them initially but society changed my mind.
And I watched the Vampire Diaries- LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE
So if you say Twilight ruined vampires, I totally agree with you. They are glittery sparkly idiots. If you love Twilight, read: smart graceful vampires. However, Vampire Diaries COMPLETELY changed my mind about vampires. I didn’t watch the show for so long because of all the vampire stigma that’s going on. But you HAVE to watch the show. Talented writers, tear-jerking moments as well as ugly- crying, fangirling because of excess emotion; this show has it all.
When it comes to vampires, I stay neutral. I mean, I have read a few books about vampires and watched all of the Twilight movies. Even now, I watch The Vampire Diaries. One time, I was quite obsessed with this particular book, though that obsession did not last very long.
Lots of my friends are HUGE fans. They would talk about vampires every single day. However, a few others despise them. One reason is probably because they hear so much about vampires, with the books, movies, TV shows, and all. My friends were actually the ones who introduced me to The Vampire Diaries.
Thank you for all your comments! It’s so nice read what everyone has to say, and to see the variations in likes and dislikes.
Are there any books that you have read about supernatural beings (not just vampires) that you would like to see turned into movies?
