For The Win
By Cory Doctorow (2010)
What happens when playing a game becomes a job? A must-read for MMORPG fans and radical activists alike, For The Win is set in the world of teenage “gold farmers” – online gamers who grind through game levels for hours a day in order to gather virtual artifacts which are then resold for real-world money. In Doctorow’s book, many of these farmers are kept in sweatshops by violent and manipulative quasi-criminal employers. But what would happen if these players started to organize and fight back?
For The Win is as much about macroeconomics and global labour practices as about internet activism and online gaming. Don’t let these heavy topics dissuade you though; it’s still a kickin’ and highly entertaining read.
