The unlikely hero of room 13bThe Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, by Teresa Toten

When a support group for teens with OCD start seeking ways to make themselves feel stronger, they turn to superhero personas. Adam doesn’t think it’s helping him much, in fact he feels like things are falling apart and he’s starting to unravel. Finding a little support from friends helps, but the most amazing thing is realizing in the end how he has been there for others – a hero of a different kind, but a hero nonethless.

Also available as an ebook.

  1. Not much information regarding the content of the book is given, but the cover seems interesting. I mostly mean the title because I feel like 13B refers to someone being unlucky and unwanted, that was very clever of the author.

  2. This one is about a group of teens with OCD who are in a support group, and how they try to imagine themselves as stronger than they are by choosing superheroes to model themselves after, in hopes that this will make them feel strong enough to start beating the anxiety that plagues them.
Adam sort of leads this, but he also is struggling a lot himself. He’s in love with one of the girls in the group. His mother’s mental health is going downhill a bit. His OCD habits are getting worse. he feels like he’s failing, but at the same time, he is there for some members of the group and really helps them, so to them, he is looking like a strong, caring type – a hero.
Without giving anything away, it takes a bit of a meltdown for him to see that he has their support and can lean on them a bit, and also how strong he really has been, bearing all of this alone.
It’s a really compelling read, and I grew really attached to Adam by the end. I love it when I’m really rooting for the main character in a book!
